Guest guest
Welcome! First off, I would highly recommend joining the pecanbread yahoo group. They deal more with kids with ASD. We will certainly try to help you here, but I think most of us are here for gut issues, so the folks at pecanbread might be more helpful for the ASD. I will try to answer some of your questions!1) Can we still do this diet?2) How do I substitute for the items he eats to get started?Pecanbread.com has some easy, kid-friendly recipes that people can use to get started. If he's very picky about his food, I wouldn't try to switch him over to the SCD all at once, but maybe you can start offering some SCD legal foods to him to see if he likes them.3) Should I continue CF even though he shows no sensitivities on his IgG to dairy products?4) What probiotic is best given on SCD?I think the only legal probiotic in supplement form is acidophilus. We can also have boulardii, which is a friendly yeast. You can get SCDophilus (SCD legal acidophilus) from GI Prohealth online.5) Which yogurt maker should I buy?All the commercial yogurt makers seem to have trouble with the 24 hour fermenting time, and tend to overheat, and then you have to deal with a dimmer switch and all. I think many people have had success making their own yogurt makers, by using either their oven or an insulated box and a lightbulb to keep the temperature constant. Hopefully someone else has more info on this method.6) Is grapeseed extract ok given on the SCD?As long as it doesn't have any other illegals added as fillers. (never taken it, so I'm not sure what form it comes in)7) What is best for yeast on the SCD?Many people use natural antifungals such as coconut oil, grapeseed extract, olive leaf extract, boulardii, oil of oregano, and garlic. Many people also do a yeast elimination diet, which strictly limits or avoids fruit, honey, and high-carb veggies. I think it also may limit cheese and nuts, and some other things. It's all about finding what works for your (or your child's) particular system.8) Other supplements ok to give on SCD?Such as? Many supplements are fine in and of themselves; it's all a matter of finding them without illegal fillers. Pecanbread.com has a good list of legal and illegal foods, and also a list of legal and illegal supplement additives.Sorry for all my questions, but i am so despirate to help our little guy, and i know it's going to be a fight, but i have to do it to help him feel better. That's what we're here for! I hope he starts feeling better soon! But since that is a whole line of food that he can eatwhen so much else is restricted, I would definitely look into it. It will make everyone'slife easier. Guest guest
Hi Sandy, I have no ASD experience but Pecanbread will be a great resource for you! I just wanted to say that I am in Murrieta, and have been doing SCD for a couple of years. Feel free to contact me off-list if you have any local SCD questions! Dawn > > Hi All, > I'm hoping to get some good advice for you all. i'm despirate and would even pay somebody to help me get started on the SCD Diet. Our son is almost 4, end of June, ASD and has pretty severe constipation issues, a very limited diet and craves carbs all day long! He has quite a few food sensitivities shown on his latest IgG test and I just don't know where to start. He's often in pain, bloated, gas and his cravings cause so much anxiety. He's been GFCF for quite a while, but with a few accidents. I don't feel the GFCF Diet has done enough. it's not healing his gut and we know he has severe gut issues. Because of his self-restricted food options, I'm lost with where to start. it looks like some of the items used most on the SCD are things he may not be able to have. his IgG shows on a scale of 1-3, 3 being very sensitive, > 3's are Coconut, Gluten, Oates, Rice, Rye, Wheat, Sesame, Pea-Green, 2's are Peanut, Soybean, Black Walnut, Corn, malt, barley, tomatoe, asparagus 1's are Almond, Cashew, safflower, avacado, cantaloupe, carrot, celery, eggplant, grapefruit, lemon, lettuce, orange, black pepper and watermelon. I'm so tired of seeing our little guy in pain and pray that this diet will help. > > He self restricts the following foods Bell & GFCF Chicken Nuggets, Stage 2 baby foods-fruits and some veggies only, baby rice cereal, Ruffles potatoe chips, smorable grahm crackers- OD's on them! Montana Choc chip cookies, Glutino cereal bars, tempt-hemp milk ice cream, fresh fruits such as apples, pears and sometimes grapes and WATER ONLY! Will not take any other beverage of any kind! This is his diet and he is always hungry and in pain;( > > 1) Can we still do this diet? > 2) How do I substitute for the items he eats to get started? > 3) Should I continue CF even though he shows no sensitivities on his IgG to dairy products? > 4) What probiotic is best given on SCD? > 5) Which yogurt maker should I buy? > 6) Is grapeseed extract ok given on the SCD? > 7) What is best for yeast on the SCD? > 8) Other supplements ok to give on SCD? > > Sorry for all my questions, but i am so despirate to help our little guy, and i know it's going to be a fight, but i have to do it to help him feel better. > > Thanks in advance for any help you can offer! > Sandy in Temecula, CA >

So, no oats, rice, rye, wheat, or sesame (for those not sensitive, sesame seeds or tahini may be added later). Peanuts aren't recommend at the beginning of the diet, so you're safe on that one. Soybeans are not allowed. Corn, malt, and barley are out. At least half the things he can't have because of sensitivities aren't permitted on SCD, any way! The intro diet soup calls for chicken and carrots -- I couldn't tolerate the carrots, and was too sick to make soup, so I ate roasts and steamed peeled zucchini, which I did tolerate. SCD can work miracles. Sometimes, though, you have to be a bit creative in its implementation. We'll be happy to help if we can -- you might want to read the web site at www.pecanbread.com for information on implementing the diet for ASD children. There is also a Yahoo group for Pecanbread, with bunches of parents who have kids as sensitive as yours, just in different ways. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
