smoking causes inflammation of the lungs and causes significant

health hazards during surgery.

Cinnamon gum and deep breathing help give up smoking

Is there anybody that quit smoking before getting your Health Risk

Assessment? Today is day 2 to quit and MOST of the time, I'm ok.

I'm just eatting instead of smoking, which isn't good either.

SOMEBODY HELP!!!!!

Having family members who have quit I can say that some of the cravings never go

away. My brother quit a couple of years ago, but there are still times that out

of the blue he will crave a cigarette. I guess old habits die hard.

Hi ,

I smoked too I havn't had my surgery yet but I quit

cold turkey. This is what I would do. I would walk

around with a water bottle and everytime I felt like

smoking I would drink water, tons of water and that

worked for me.

Good luck, quitting is no joke.

Havent read any of the replies to you so far and I saw quite a few

there so forgive me if I am being repetitive...

Use your new life as motivation. That is what you have to stay

focused on.

I quit smoking about 10 years ago now. It was one of the hardest

thing I have ever had to do in my entire life.

My best advice to you is to never give up. Keep quitting every day

if you have to until you get it right. Don't let it defeat you. You

are in control of it!

They say the worst cravings last only so many seconds or minutes

(can never remember how long) so just get through one craving at a

time. It will pass. Breath deeply and take in oxygen instead of

smoke each time you crave a cigarette.

If your lungs feel worse than they do even when you are smoking for

awhile it is because all that crap is loosening up in there and you

need to get rid of it.

Drink a LOT of water and maybe find something to keep your mouth

busy that is not bad for you and will not cause weight gain. I know

a friend of mine started eating sunflower seeds to help himself

quit.

That is my quit smoking advice du jour. Hope it helps! You can do

it!

Thank you, Colleen! I wish I could find someone close by to help me

through this HORRIBLE time. I'm trying to get through this minute

by minute and hour by hour. WHEW!! It's tough!! People that have

never smoked don't have a CLUE!!!

It IS tough and don't let anyone tell you any differently.

Fortunately it is worth ALL the pain in the end though. You keep up

the good fight girl!

Hi , I had quit smoking for a year before my surgery. I started smoking

again. I was about six months out. I was getting sicker and sicker. It

finally dawned on me it was my smoking that caused the set back. I was very

ill. I quit and almost immediately I felt better. I don't know if it absorbed

differently or what but couldn't handle it after surgery. I have quit seven

different times through out my life. Once a smoker always craving(for me

anyways). Good Luck. Cindy in MI Goldstein

Now this topic is right up my alley!!! It's been 2 months for me and I am

loving being smoke free (I never in a million years thought THAT would come

out of my mouth!) I'm 35 and have smoked for 20 years. What made me give up

cig's?? I WANT THIS SURGERY more than any cigarette - even one dipped in

gold!!! I feel great and at this point, I don't even miss it anymore. Hang

in there. Just put in a good effort toward resisting the temptation and

you'll make it. You can do it!!!!

I read it is harder to give up smoking that to quit heroin. One

time I quit cold turkey and I have withdrawl pains. So I quit for 5

years and got bored and started again! Boy was I dumb

Hi teresa

Well Just like you I am trying to quit before the surgery. Have you

thought about trying zyban? That is what my husband and I are using,

and is what we used in the past and it works great for me. I chew

alot of gum, but now I have to learn to give that up for the surgery

also. It is tuff to stop smoking. a friend of mine always had a

toothpick in her mouth when she was trying to quit, or chewed on

straws. Things we dont do to make ourselves feel better.

hang in there you can do it.
