Guest guest
Cherylann There are no SCD-legal fiber supplements, but there are things you can do to deal with constipation. Most fiber supplements contain illegal nonactive ingredients, but the active ingredient is also a problem, as it is usually cellulose in some form, insoluble, and polysaccharide. Which means not only damage to the intestinal walls but there will be plenty of food (through fermentation) for the bacteria we are trying to get back under control. Elaine has some suggestions: http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/kb/constipation.htm http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/kb/constipation_continued.htm We get plenty of fiber in the foods we eat on SCD, but those of us dealing with constipation might have to adjust our food choices to eliminate those foods that slow down motility more than usual. For example, I have to limit myself to one nut flour item per day since nut flour is constipating for me. So are the high-carb foods, for me anyway. So your son might need to do some testing to find out which foods are better for him. Elaine’s constipation protocol uses prunes and fruit juice, as increased vitamin C helps with constipation. Another thing you can do is supplement magnesium or use epsom salt baths, as extra magnesium helps increase peristalsis. An osmotic laxative also helps, a stool softener in other words. I use Miralax daily, and have for more than six years (my digestive disorders are functional and impact digestive motility). It doesn’t contain any illegals, although it is a synthetic, polyethylene glycol. It also helps to boost electrolytes, stay hydrated, get regular exercise (walking is especially good for constipation), eat plenty of fats (if your digestion can cope with fats…) My constipation has improved a bit the longer I’ve been on SCD. When I started SCD I needed to use a motility medication, Zelnorm, along with Miralax. By the time the FDA pulled Zelnorm from the market my gut ecology had improved enough that I could get by with just continuing the Miralax, taking magnesium regularly, eating some prunes a few times a week, and limiting those foods that aggravate my digestive motility. So the longer you’re on SCD, the better. I also keep water enemas on hand for the really severe bouts of constipation I suffer every few months, part of my body’s neurological cycle. Usually I just need to use an enema one time to get my digestive motility working again. Kim M.
