I wore mine until today. He finally told me today I can do away with it. I had my TT on Aug 21. I wouldn't sit without if I were you but lying in bed without it for a break would probably be fine. I believe the idea of the binder is to do the muscle work while the stitches are healing. Just my 2 cents worth! Guest guest
Sharon has it right. I had procedures (abdominoplasty + outer thigh and butt lifts) which added up to an LBL. I wore my binder for 3 weeks (or was it four?). I only removed it to shower. --Steve At 6:55 PM -0700 10/9/03, Sharon Ann Merritt wrote: >My PS said I could take a short break from it. Guest guest
Hate to toss this out there.....binders are great, but my doctor sent me home without one. The nurses were shocked. He said the blood supply was so compromised where all the corners came together at the bottom that he did not want to restrict them further. Everything healed just fine, but I had a hernia repair and some superficial skin work. Perhaps it varies with the type and amount of the surgery. I sure wouldn't worry about a half hour here or there to just freshen up and feel better. Take care, in Austin RNY April 1998

Dave I think a lot of it has to do with the type of surgery and whether you had muscle repair. I had extensive muscle repair done and that's why my PS stressed keeping the binder on for at least 7 weeks. If I had had just a pannilectomy it probably would have been different! Guest guest
It took about three weeks for the stiffness/pain to subside, and maybe a few weeks more for the excruciating pain on coughing or sneezing to settle down to a " dull roar. " I had the bariatric tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty (stomach muscles tightened) as well as butt and outer thigh lift. There was no pain at all from the butt and thigh portion because the procedure severed the nerves--they are only now beginning to re-assert themselves to the point that I can feel sensation on the skin over the incision areas. BUT IT WAS WORTH IT ALL! --Steve At 11:21 AM -0400 10/21/03, dkeyez@... wrote: >I was wondering for those of you that had a TT or LBL has your muscles >loosened up? Guest guest
I was told it can take up to six months for the swelling to go down, depending on how tight your TT was an whether or not you had muscle reconstruction. I think mine took about 4 months. The muscles take a while to stretch out. You have to take it pretty slowly and not over-extend them. Once your abdomen is not so tender, it helps to stretch and massage the scars with some kind of oil, to loosen them up, so they don't bind when you move. It also helps to massage the muscles and try to break down any lumps or bumps. Apart from that, when you are feeling ready, you can do some ab stretches to help the muscles relax. This surgery does take longer to fully recover from than the RNY. I can tell you though, it is more than worth it. I now have a totally flat stomach and strong ab muscles. I didn't really feel thin until after TT (abdominal reconstruction). It probably took about 8 months before I started doing strengthening exercises (ab curls, etc.). You don't have to do them to have a flat stomach, but strong abs help support your back and make your body more stable. Hang in there!
