Hi

I'm nearly 5 1/2 weeks post-op, and my cheeks and upper lip are

still swollen. It's driving me nuts! I thought it would be gone by

now. My chin is still pretty numb as well. I guess I can only wait

and try to be patient! This swelling will go down eventually.

Best of luck with your recovery!

oh dear, i am only on day 8 post-op and I am already fed up with the

swelling. The thing is one side of my face is more swollen than the

other so now I look lopsided. One would think that seeing that I've

already been through surgery before to the face I would be more

patient. I went out to Bloomingdales today and I too felt like

everyone was staring at me wondering what was wrong. But you know

what really got to me? It was the not being able to talk properly! I

mean if I look swollen, ok, so I look weird but if I can't talk

either and explain why I'm swollen...well that's just frustrating.

I have been applying a lot of ice to the swelling and that seems to

help. Also arnica cream every night. As for the numbness, from

previous experience it can take a while so like you all

said...patience. So sick of that word!

It takes most people a lot more than 12 days to have the swelling go

down, so try to relax about it. You're still an " orthognathic baby " --

some docs say it can take years for all the swelling to go away.

That does NOT, however, mean that you'll still look like a chipmunk

five years from now!

Same is true with sensation. It may return quickly, or slowly, but it

will -- or won't -- return in its own good time.

Best,

Cammie

Most of my swelling went down within the 2nd week. However, after

being unwired, and having my surgical archwires removed, my swelling

has come back, which is causing some discomfort. I find that if I

talk too much that I swell to the point that people are asking me if

I have gauze stuck in my cheeks. I just need to take it easy with

the talking.

As for numbness, mine is slowly getting better, but the more I talk

the number I feel. Usually after a sleep, and rest my jaw, then the

swelling goes down a bit, and the numbness subsides, but they

quickly change once I start talking. I'm hoping that a few more

weeks will finally stabilize this.
