Guest guest
I need to lose weight. In the past I used Weight Watchers and lost 50 pounds. This was before SCD. Now counting points just annoys me. I tend to binge when I focus on food. I am on my first day of using Sparkspeople. It's not my first time using Sparkpeople. It is free, easy to use and tracks various nutrients. I am using their meal plans because without guidance I don't eat a variety of foods. If the daily meal plan calls for spaghetti, I use spaghetti squash. I swap out all the canned foods for fresh and I use SCD cooked beans in the recipes. The only big issue is the bread. What do I substitute for all the bread? Do I substitute almond bread and coconut flour baked goods for the endless bagels, whole wheat bread, and crackers? Nutritionally speaking SCD baked goods are lower in carbs and higher in fats and protein. Should I strive to add cooked vegetables to the SCD baked goods to raise the carb counts and lower the calories? Or should I just be happy eating my SCD crackers, sandwich bread, and muffins in place of the regular non-SCD baked breads? I have most of my SCD recipes typed into the Sparkspeople recipe site so I have an reasonable accurate calorie count and nutrient information. With all the major issues that people struggle with, this seems a trivial question, but I am 47 years old, 5 feet tall and quickly getting up to 200 pounds. I cannot weight that much. I am a single parent and plan on dancing at my daughter wedding someday. She's only nine years old, so I got to get healthy and stay that way for awhile! I have been eating SCD for three years. I binge, cheat, and generally have a crazy relationship with food. I have IBS and am gluten intolerant.
Guest guest
I need to lose weight.Gosh, it's so amazing how hard some people have to try to lose weight while I'm over here stressing myself out trying to gain!! Not sure if this'll help you or not, but Mark's Daily Apple (haha sorry to sound like a broken record; I've just started following the blog it so it's kinda been on my mind lately) is ALWAYS talking about ways to lose weight, and how easy it is, etc....Maybe you could check out a few of their posts to see if it's applicable for you? It seems like it might be easier to adapt to the SCD than the plan you're talking about. Guest guest
I stopped losing weight in my third year on SCD, so I’ve been battling weight gain ever since [sigh]. I have a very poor metabolism, and dealing with neuropathies makes things harder. Because of my functional digestive disorders I already don’t eat anything high-carb, so I don’t have much cut back on. In the end, when it comes to losing weight it is all about the number of calories consumed for your body weight and level of activity. Exercise helps to burn off calories, but with my neurological issues that is becoming more and more difficult, which is why I can gain weight rapidly. I found myself gaining 40 pounds over the past 3 years, so now I’m really working at losing weight I don’t have any miracle-working ideas, I’m afraid. I looked at all the foods I regularly eat, determined approximate calorie counts, then determined how much I could eat in a day to enable me to lose weight over a week’s time. In my case that is about 1000 to 1200 calories. I also make myself walk for at least 30 minutes a day, even if it is difficult physically and I collapse when I get home or back to my desk at work (really hate these neuromuscular issues!). I am on my feet a lot during the day at work, but it isn’t sustained so I do take longer walks, up to the limits of my body’s nervous system. I’m just starting a tai chi class, and am hoping that my digestion and my nervous system will handle it, as walking is rough in the high heat and humidity of summer where I live. Because of my digestion I already limit myself to one nut flour item per day, only one fruit serving per day, only eat low and medium carb veggies, eat lean meats, don’t eat dairy. I usually keep 2 or 3 flavors of nut flour muffins in my freezer, only one of which uses dried fruits, so I can cut back on the calorie hit from the muffins by eating the lower calorie muffins more often than the higher-calorie type. I cut back on the amount of vegetables I eat every meal. And I only use a teaspoon of peanut butter every other day in my daily applesauce (my body craves peanut butter so I have to eat small amounts regularly). So there are things I can do to cut back on the calorie count per day, and I have begun losing weight slowly. As long as coming off, I’m pleased [grin]. Kim M. Guest guest
I like the carb chart on Mark's Daily apple too. I do think carbs are the main problem with bingeing and weight gain. Don't worry Alyssa, those of us struggling on SCD are at the age where weight is a struggle regardless. Enjoy those teen years PJ > > > > I need to lose weight. > > > Gosh, it's so amazing how hard some people have to try to lose weight > while I'm over here stressing myself out trying to gain!!
