Guest guest
It really has gone by fast! I would have never thought I would be saying it but it is something that everyone should try to remember! Guest guest
Jane, how long as it been exactly again since you had your surgery? Also, did your surgeon mention whether you would need to see him again for check-ups on your jaw and if so, how often? Can't wait to get to the point that you are at! Guest guest
My surgery was February 23. It has been 2 months and 11 days. I saw the surgeon a week later and then every two weeks for the next three appointments and then about a month later. I had my stitches checked and x rays the first visit. I then had just two check ups the next two. 5 1/2 weeks post op my wires were cut then 2 weeks later 8 weeks post op my splint was taken out. The last appointment they also took more photos of my teeth. It really feels great when you know an end is near!! Everything just takes time. Jane > > > > > Jane, > > > > > Congratulations!!! Guest guest
A quick question about wire removal. I have two appointments set up - one for Wire Removal and the other for Skeletal Wire Removal. As my Surgeon explained, I have wires - both top and bottom - ( I also saw them in x-rays. ) that are an " insurance policy " type thing and wrap around my jaw. They insure that if something happens to the regular wiring and splint my mouth will not become a total mess (or so he says!). Has anyone had this Skeletal Wire Removal process? I'm told it will involve some gas and novacain and then it's a quick and painless process. I find that a bit hard to believe. Feedback would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance, Carol > > > > > > Jane, > > > > > > Congratulations!!! That is fantastic! Guest guest
Carol i have thin wires that I could see in the X-rays also. I asked if they would be removed, and he said, " not unless they bother you. " So I guess that mine will stay in forever. > > > > > > > Jane, > > > > > > > Congratulations!!! That is fantastic! Guest guest
, That's very interesting. Thanks for sharing. I'll be sure and ask my Surgeon for more details when I see him next week. Take care, Carol > > > > Jane, how long as it been exactly again since you had your > > surgery? > > > > Also, did your surgeon mention whether you would need to see > him > > > > again for check-ups on your jaw and if so, how often? Guest guest
Carol, Interesting, I don't think that I had that because it was never removed or mentioned. The plates that I have in my upper cheek area stay put as far as I know although I can feel them on my right side. Let me know how the removal turns out. Guest guest
Jane, I was a bit surprised myself as my Surgeon hadn't mentioned this prior to surgery. I'll keep the board posted. Guest guest
As with so much of this stuff, the terms are the same, but mean different things. There are archwires, of course, which provide much of the moving force for the ortho, with their tensions against the brackets. There are wire ties that can be used to attach the archwires into the brackets. There are surgical wires, which are essentially very tough, stiff archwires, along with wire ties (for me, anyhow). And then there are mouths that are wired shut, by means of wires that weave between the loops/hooks/brackets/whatever attached to the archwires. In addition, there are internal, or skeletal wires. Some stay forever. Some are used rather than screws and plates (or in addition to them) to keep things where the surgeon put them. Sometimes they're removed; sometimes they stay forever -- usually, I think, the ones that stay forever are in the chin. Anyone who is uncertain or concerned about which technique a surgeon plans to use should ask him or her. But you should also bear in mind that conditions in the operating room (a bad break, or brittle or thin bones, e.g.) can change the plan. Cammie And my experience with gas has been that, if it hurts, who cares? The gas sends you into that nice, lovely spot where it doesn't matter. > > Carol, > > Interesting, I don't think that I had that because it was never > > removed or mentioned. Guest guest
Cammie, Thanks so much for all these details. Having spoken with my Surgeon on Monday, I'm feeling much better about the Skeletal Wires I have and their impending removal. I'm thinking about the gas/injection/removal process and will see how I feel as the time draws near. I'm scared of the pain ... but trust my Surgeon. Time will tell. Thanks again! Guest guest
Yes, I recently was shown x rays and explained that I have plates and screws in my upper.
