One red flag in dating would be someone who was opposed to the diet and tried to

sabotage it. In this case is sounds like narcissism or abuse. They may try to

blame the diet for their behavior, but if not for the diet, they would do this

in other aspects of your life.

Best to stay away from these types.

Others may use the diet as an excuse for " not being into you " . A good and kind

person who is truly interested in getting to know you should hopefully look

beyond this.

Hi PJ,

Not that this applies to the dating world- which is a whole other dance

altogether. I really hear and want to acknowledge what people are talking

about... It can be challenging..

My own family routinely tried to sabotage me with the diet directly lying to me

over and over. I kid you not! It's actually a lot worse than this. I won't

even go into one instance of what one of them did to me when I brought my own

food to a family function.

For me the hardest has been dealing with family.

I am glad I live far from them. Sounds harsh but most of my family is not

supportive.. They have never been supportive of my health challenges.

Thing is as they've seen me heal some of them have come around just happy even

though they lack understanding and I still get comments. My father (and his

side of the family) are extremely supportive as when I first started I told him

" Abba, this helps me feel better " and he was like that was all he needed to

hear.

Crohn's caused a whole chain reaction for me. I became socially isolated and

pretty depressed in general. Always being the loner. I met my husband when I

was quite young and he has always been incredibly supportive and so has my

brother. I consider myself so fortunate!

It was hard when I first started the diet since my husband and I- one of our

connections was food and it was like we had to relearn all of that.. Suddenly I

immersed myself in even more culture, art, music, theater and so on. So

enriching!

When I started getting better I made new friends.

The years being isolated and all of the family drama taught me to kind of choose

who I want in my life and it showed me that there are many wonderful people out

there and the ones that really care about me have no issues with what I eat and

actually want me to feel comfortable and safe. They have no issue with a

restaurant I choose or that I bring my own snacks etc.

A few months ago I went to my first dinner party! I have not done something

like this in years. I have since gone to a few more.

I am so thankful for being back in the land of the living.

It's such a blessing that all of my hard work has paid off.

Moreover, what Elaine has given me- well her hard work uplifted me out of the

catacombs and hell of Crohn's Disease.

Hi Jodi,

I hear you and how sad for your family. They are the ones who are missing out

here. This is exactly what I mean about dating or any other situation with

people: The people who are nor supportive or even cruel about GI issues and diet

are just that: not supportive. We think the problem may be our situation, but it

is more of a reflection of them.

I agree that it is an adjustment and yes so isolating. Feeling sick was

isolating enough and I spent many days in tears feeling defective. This board

helped me not feel so alone. The food is a challenge, but like you, I feel like

SCD gave me my life back. It has been hard " coming out " to people about diet but

many have been supportive.

I haven't eaten at a dinner party yet, but I have found some restaurants that

work for me. I will admit that at first this threw my DH off because he loves to

eat out, and was angry at first that he " could not take me anywhere " , but he has

seen the diet help me and has become more sensitive.

I am glad that you have such a supportive spouse and good friends. I think we

have all learned that the people in our lives who like us for us, will like us

regardless.

There are no perfect people in this world and our culture focuses on physical

perfection. The dating world sounds pretty brutal these days, but I hope there

are still some kind ones around.
