Guest guest
I buy a 5 lb jar of honey each month, pour some into a little plastic bottle and store the rest. I'm wondering what others use for their everyday honey use container? My little plastic lid is breaking on mine, it's always sticky and now I have little ants in my kitchen who love nothing more that a sticky honey squeeze bottle! Does anyone have any creative squeeze containers they use?? Marla
Guest guest
I have 2 of the honey jars seen at http://www.amazon.com/Norpro-Silicone-Honey-Dipper-Set/dp/B0000W11JC/ref=sr_1_2?\ ie=UTF8 & s=home-garden & qid=1275522013 & sr=8-2m . I like variety, so have each one filled with a different honey. Funny store, pre-SCD and when I lived in a more ant prone area, my family was not big on honey. There was a container in the cupboard, but no one really used it. One day, I opened the cupboard and saw a little ant run for cover. I told my dad, and he started turning the little carousel in the cupboard, and came across the honey container. There were masses of little ants, big ants, and mondo sized ants all crowded around the lid of the container, glutting on honey. We all screamed and my dad threw the container into the sink, but ants started climbing out in all directions, faster then he could knock them back in. He turned on the water and the garbage disposal, and most of them met a very ugly end. I don't think we had honey again until I started SCD :-), and we don't have much in the way of ants around here. At our old house, we had to set up moats around the bird cage (each leg sat in a plastic milk cap filled with water) to keep them out of the bird's food. Guest guest
Hey Marla! You could also try one of these " syrup pourers " - they have them at our cafe at work and they are great... http://www.amazon.com/Maple-Syrup-Honey-Dispenser-14/dp/B001CDVPOO/ref=sr_1_1?ie\ =UTF8 & s=home-garden & qid=1275534303 & sr=1-1 You can also just do a search on amazon for " syrup pourers " and you'll see several styles. I bought one from Crate and Barrel, but the spout is too narrow so it drains really slowly. So in the meantime I am still refilling my honeybear -Joanna SCD 9/2009, Crohn's 1992, 22.5mg Prednisone > > > > > I buy a 5 lb jar of honey each month, pour some into a little plastic bottle and store the rest. Guest guest
It mostly worked too! But birds are terrible food flingers (I still sometimes find dried squash on my bedroom walls, and Nikko hasn't eaten in there for a very long time). My previous bird (JJ)dropped something on the floor, and within an hour, there were 2 trails of ants, side by side. One trail was coming through the front door to the food, the second trail from the food out the front door. But without the moats, they would have been crawling all over the cage and in his food dishes too. Totally OT, but this story illustrates the buggers that birds are. My dad and JJ hated each other (JJ hated all men). My dad had a bad habit of laying things down next to his cage (sunglasses, wristwatches, etc.), and sneaky JJ would somehow pull them through the bars, and completely dismantled them. Nothing was broken, just every last screw and pin removed. Watching my father sift through the bottom of the cage looking for all the pieces was pretty funny!
