Guest guest
Rymi48 I've just done a quick search to see whether I could find an explanation of different types of splints and from what I could gather, different surgeons use different names to decribe essentially the same thing. Some, such as my orthodontist, refer to the splint as a wafer and others refer to an acrylic splint. I know for sure that a splint is designed specifically to your case so it will differ from patient to patient. I am going to hazard a guess that all splints used nowadays are more or less the same size in terms of thickness but I'm sure that after having it in your mouth for several weeks it feels huge and grosse! I think at first it will be hard for us to talk with a splint and elastics but like all things, practice makes perfect and eventually we will get the hang of things. It will be important not to overdo it initially so if you are asking these questions because you are planning around work I would try to get as much time off as possible to recover without too much pressure. Remember also that as your jaw heals the surgeon will be presumably graduating you to different types of elastics, some may be tighter than others (at least this has been the case for others and will be for me from what I understand). Guest guest
, I am almost three weeks post-op. I am wired and have a splint. I didn't talk, at all, the first week. I went through 4 notebooks instead! But, towards the end of that first week, beginning of the second, (once the swelling went down just a bit) I started to try and to practice. And you know what - eventually - you can do it! And sometime after that - people can understand you! It's amazing ... and true. Guest guest
I've read a bunch of messages about talking after surgery. I had lower jaw advancement on july 13 and I am wired shut with a splint. But until now I haven't been able to talk. You can imagine me as trying to talk with my mouth tightly closed. I can make some sounds and only my sister can understand some words. For everyting else I use my notepad and pen. Namrita.
