Guest guest
Hello all- I have now been on SCD for 1 month and have not seen any improvements. It seems like I am going to the bathroom more often now than I was before. Also, it feels like my diarrhea has gotten worse. Does anyone have any advice? Should I stay on the diet? Also, I am losing alot of weight... are there any foods that can help me with weight gain? Is it common to lose a lot of weight on this diet? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks,

Yes - it can be quite common in the first month or two to lose a lot of weight on the diet. Some people continue losing weight, other people regularize and then turn around and gain the weight back. And then it can even be hard to keep weight off after a while. Mara, falling, unfortunately, in the last category at the moment.

I don’t understand though why weight gain would become such an issue given how balanced and healthy this way of eating is. Can anyone explain this? Eileen Cawood email: parvus@... Guest guest
LOL Yes, being middle aged, this is a problem!! My teen aged kids can eat anything all day long, but not me. I doubt weight gain would be an issue for a teen or younger person on SCD. When everything went through me, I lost weight. Now I believe my gut is healed enough to absorb calories, and I have to watch them in any form. One can eat a lot on SCD. Carbs, nuts, honey- all these can put on weight. I do have to say it is not as big a problem than when I ate anything, but I do have to watch it. I had to watch it pre-scd and now that I am feeling better, thankfully, I have to watch it. However, this tells me that my gut is now absorbing what I eat. There is some theory about gut bacteria contributing to weight gain by breaking down food products and releasing more calories too. I do not know the source. PJ > >> > >> Hello all- > >> > >> I have now been on SCD for 1 month and have not seen any improvements. Well, you know, I'd be very happy to donate about a hundred pounds to some of the light-weights on this list. My particular form of gut issues includes unwarranted weight gain, not weight loss. What SCD does in the long run is normalize our weight -- those who need to gain usually do, and those who need to lose usually do. However, for the thin folks, one of the issues can be a lack of appetite, and often, people don't realize how little they are eating until the weight starts falling off. Contrariwise, those who have felt ill when eating for so long now enjoy eating, and may go a trifle overboard. The whacko part is that fats are the friends of both the thin folks, because it gives them more calories for less food, and the larger folk, because good fats help us feel satisfied sooner. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle

The LDN is phenomenally helpful, but in some of us it prevents weight gain. So when I got on the SCD and gradually lost and lost and lost weight, 60+ pounds-worth (I wasn't much overweight in the first place), I couldn't, and haven't, been able to gain any back. I no longer have abdominal pain and eat like the proverbial horse, including as much fruit, honey, etc., as I want, but it doesn't matter what I eat. Now I'm too thin. But I guess I'd rather have that problem than to have to continue to worry about weight gain, as I had for the rest of my life before a year-and-a-half ago.n
Guest guest
Well, random event happened yesterday...I suddenly had a change of symptoms... going from 8 times a day to 2-3 times a day. Can the change in symptoms really happen that sudden? It has really shocked me and given me more faith in the diet. I did the intro diet and have then followed the diet strictly. I did not follow the stage process because I found myself starving all the time. I used to take Lialda and Asacol but both of them ended up making me feel VERY nauseous (so I stopped those). My doctor felt like it was very important for me to stay on them and did not believe me when I said I was nauseous... so I stopped the meds without telling him. From yesterday, I have been starting to gain weight back and I have a lot more energy (I am also taking B vitamins to help give me more energy from my food), which is great because I am starting my new job on Monday. As of right now, it seems like the diet is doing what it is supposed to. Maybe I just needed that downturn to make things turn even better. Thank you for all the advice! > > > > Hello all- > > > > I have now been on SCD for 1 month and have not seen any improvements. Guest guest
Hi - that is amazing news- congrats! Every one's experience is a little different, but I do think it's the diet working. And don't be discouraged if you go back to 8 times a day before hitting 2-3 again. I know when I started, I expected the results to be gradual and predictable... but I found out quickly that it's " non-linear " (as the moderators put it). That's why keeping a journal is so fun. I actually graph the number of times a day I go because I can see the overall trend of it going down even though from a day to day basis I am up and down. Keep up the good work! -Joanna SCD 9/2009, Crohn's 1992, 30mg Prednisone > > Well, random event happened yesterday...I suddenly had a change of symptoms... going from 8 times a day to 2-3 times a day. Guest guest
This another " everyone is different " bit. I gained weight after about 6 months on SCD, and gained some more once I started LDN. This was all good of course, because I needed it! Two other people here have told me that they've gained while on LDN as well. Maybe I just needed that downturn to make things turn even better. Sometimes, it seems as if nothing will ever get better. That's yet another reason to keep a food and event diary. Because when you look back through it, you can not only trouble shoot foods which might be an issue for you, but you can see, " By golly, was it REALLY that bad three weeks ago? " and you realize how far you've come. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
