Guest guest
, I was going to ask the same question. My doctor had me make sure that I got in my protein of 50 to 60 grams a day. That was the most important thing and it continues to be. I had trouble eating in the beginning and I was encouraged to get as many calories as I could along with the protein. I was told that if I didn't eat enough and get enough protein I would go into starvation mode which isn't good. I would encourage you to talk to your doctor or nutrienist. Good luck!!! Guest guest
Thanks so much, Dora. You are truly a sweetheart! Rich is the sweetest man I ever met and I told him before the surgery that it was time for him to take care of himself first and that it was okay to do that. Plus I also look at the surgery as a thing that he is doing for *us* and our future. As the surgeon said, this surgery is not about what you weigh or look like in a year or two, but is it about your health 5 years or 10 years or 15 years from now. But I also look at it as helping me. I'm overweight (255 at 5'8 " - large frame thanks to German and Scandanavian breeding) and have diabetes and borderline high blood pressure (treated). I figured that his changing his eating habits would also provide incentive for me too. Since his health will improve, we'll both be able to be alot more active and that will help us both so very much. I can freely admit that I wish I were him and that the pounds were melting off me too. I've struggled with weight pretty much my whole life. My insurance doesn't cover this surgery plus my BMI is a bit lower than the recommended for the surgery (not by much!) though with diabetes and HBP...I might qualify (if my insurance did cover it). However, I'll be 45 in a few months and we'd like to see if we are meant to be parents and I couldn't do the surgery and then wait for the doctor's go ahead to try - that kind of time I don't have. Anyway, I'm down 11 lbs thus far and just going to keep at it. Last year, lost almost 65 but then gained most back. Eck! I know that I cannot compete with Rich. BTW, Rich is now two weeks post-op and is down 36 lbs!!!!! And he is on the brink of the 3's! He is so excited. And also cutting back on blood pressure meds as of today...his pressure was 80/60 at the docs office though he felt fine. Yea! Kathy > I just have to take a moment and say how wonderful you are to >Rich. He is truly lucky to have you. Not many people would get on >this board and try to acquire the knowledge and ask for the help >like you are for Rich. We are all on here because it is ourselves >that will be going through this and that we are worried about. I >don't mean that as selfish, but my husband would not be on here for >me. He is very supportive and is completely on my side, but you >have gone the extra step. I hope he gives you an extra hug for >being so good to him. Guest guest
, Rich's starting weight was 437. He is down to 401 in two weeks. He was fed pureed food in the hospital on day 3 and sent home eating that. He had a bottle protein drink in the morning. Then later he has breakfast...usually cottage cheese w/fruit, egg beaters with a pureed low-fat turkey saugage and a bit of low-fat cheese though today he had tuna salad made with low-carb spicy ranch dressing. He takes his meds with one of those small cans of low sodium V8 twice a day. He finds that it kills the taste of the ground up pills. For lunch, it's some protein...either chicken, fish or pork pureed along with some vegies. Dinner will be the same. Then he'll have a protein shake made with light soy milk. And finally a sugar-free popsicle as a before bed treat. He eats 3 meals and two servings of protein supplements. His meals are probably 2 oz of protein and 2 oz of vegies but he eats the protein first. Men usually lose faster than women due to muscle mass (more muscle burns fat faster). Guest guest
, Is your doctor not interested in your getting protein in at this point? Guest guest
Good for him and his 36 pounds lost and good for you for loosing while he is. You may not loose as quickly as he will, but you do have less to loose. Men loose faster anyway. My husband is a little overweight, but not bad and I hope that the fact that I will be eating healthier will help him too. He does great on the Atkins diet, and with me trying to get my protein in that is about what I will be doing after awhile. I am sure he will drop the 25 or 30 pounds he needs to loose too. Keep up the good work!!! You too will be thinner and healthy right along with Rich. I'm eating low-carb. It is what works best for my body and my blood sugars too. Rich pretty much eats the same as me. I just eat more. :-) > Keep up the good work!!! Maybe sooner? Kathy
Guest guest
, I added this up. You had 133 calories not including what you had for dinner. This is 8 grams of protein. THIS IS NOT ENOUGH CALORIES AND NOT ENOUGH PROTEIN! Your body is going to go into starvation mode if you continue to eat like this and you aren't going to lose weight as your body tries to save itself from starving. You need to at least add some protein drinks/shakes in. Guest guest
See, you learn something new everyday. Thanks. Re: Kathy > Kathy, > > Please educate me, what is a incentive spirometer ? It is a plastic devise with a tube of sorts that you blow into and it makes the little ball go up. :-) It measures lung capacity. There is a scale on it so that you can see how far you get (not sure what the unit of measure is) and you can track improvement. It is pretty much standard issue after surgery usually. They ask people to breathe into it about 10 times an hour. What this does is fully exercise your lungs so that the changes of post-surgery pnemonia is reduced. My mom had one to use years back after her triple bypass surgery though I didn't know the name of the contraption then. I honestly saw Rich's lung capacity improve alot pre-surgery using it a number of times a day. He was given it when he went for his full days of tests (blood work, chest x-ray, EKG). Guest guest
Kathy, Thanks. I am so excited. The nerves only hit when I think about being in the hospital. I have never been in the hospital and it freaks me out a little. But I am ready!!! 9 more days!!!!
