Guest guest
Coconut oil (and/or coconut milk) and SCD goat yogurt both have ANTI-fungal properties, so I highly doubt either one would be *causing* yeast problems. Apple cider, on the other hand, certainly could. Yours is a fresh-pressed cider.... found in the refridgerated section? And you've been diluting it? Some people who have a tendancy to yeast overgrowth will need to limit some juices, fruits and honey in the very beginning of SCD. HOWEVER, those who begin SCD without any acidophilus supplements or SCD yogurt will also be the ones who tend to have more difficulty with yeast taking over. Yeast are very opportunistic and when space opens up in the gut (due to bacterial colonies dying off) they will say " Yippee!! " and gladly fill in the vacancy. That is why supplementing with acidophilus is so crucial, especially for those who are not using yogurt. Another thing to consider is that if you started the yogurt recently, what you *could* be seeing is die-off.... triggered by the yogurt. Note that Tina just experienced some of these same symptoms.... swollen tonsils, fever, etc.... after just recently re-starting SCD with her son. I am convinced his symptoms were die-off related. Patti starting over my daughter and i have been having major yeast issues the past week. i have a couple of suspicions of what is causing it (coconut oil or too much goat dairy or the " pure pressed " 100% apple cider i've been using for baking) and obviously have pulled those things out. but we have never had yeast this bad before. i believe my daughter's tonsils may be swollen from yeast. last night she had a fever for an hour and i'm not sure if that is related or not but either way we need to do something. i re-started the intro diet last night, and plan to do it for 1-2 days depending on how she and i do. after that, do i need to reintroduce foods all over again or can i jump right to the foods i know she can tolerate? thanks silvia SCD 2 months for eczema and yeast overgrowth
Guest guest
Silvia, If you feel the yogurt is causing some sort of reaction, then pull it out for now. But yogurt will NOT cause yeast to grow more.... in fact, it has the opposite effect. If I were you, I would NOT stop the yogurt.... but consider that you might be seeing die-off rather than yeast overgrowth, or that something ELSE is causing the yeast problem. Yogurt and coconut oil are very unlikely to be the cause, if that is the problem. Patti Re: starting over oh, also, should i stop the goat yogurt during this time? I'm wondering about the coconut oil, because now things are finally settling down and her last BM was greenish and tar-like, like the die-off BMs from the beginning days of the diet. At the same time, I had lots and lots of mucus discharge in addition to the worst yeast infection I've ever had. Could coconut oil be that potent, to cause massive die off with just 3 or so servings? We probably ate 3T each, total, over 3 days. My other thought is that the cheese we were eating just caused a huge flare reaction, even though she'd been tolerating small amounts just fine up until recently. Guest guest
Silvia, YES.... coconut oil CAN be that potent! What I have read is that you should start with about a half-teaspoon per day and increase gradually, as tolerated. You guys had a LOT more than that, so in this case, yeah.... I'm suspecting the coconut oil, too.... and it sounds like die-off to me. Scale back the amount you're using... but keep using it! Guest guest
Hey :)I don't know the answers to most of these questions, but I'm wondering, if you are starting over, do you not want to do a couple days of intro diet before starting stage 1? I would think that might be helpful.. as for the cow's milk, have you ever experienced any neuro type symptoms? if so you might want to experiment with goat's milk first, just to make sure.I think you can eat yogurt pretty early though, (can you eat it on intro? can't you?) I'm sure someone else will answer that question real well. As for the honey, if you're having problems, personally I would choose to delay it's introduction until you are more stable, but I'm not sure everyone finds that useful.as for stage progression, I think timing varies greatly between individuals and the differences in their conditions. Myself, I am moving incredibly, incredibly (and frighteningly and frustratingly) slowly through the stage 1/little bit of stage 2 I'm stuck in. But, I am being relieved of so many symptoms, including ones I didn't know were being caused by the gut, that I am so greatful, and I do see myself improving everyday and getting stronger, so I am understanding that my health is changing and that I am improving even though my stomach isn't ready to move forward on the stages, and that I have to be patient, and I am working different angles to see if I can support myself and my healing better. I'm really restricted right now, but it's totally, totally worth it. Best!! Â Okay, I am going to start over and go through the stages from Pecanbread. Here are my questions for stage 1... 1) When should I try my cow's milk yogurt again? 2) Can I have honey? If not, what stage? 3) Can I have SCD mayo? If not, what stage? 4) How long should I stay on stage 1? 5) And I should add a new food within the stage every ___ days? 6) I would GREATLY appreciate some good recipes for stage 1!!! Thanks all,
Guest guest
1) When should I try my cow's milk yogurt again? Everyone is different but I ate it from the beginning 2) Can I have honey? If not, what stage? Yes, but some people have done better with low carb SCD. I tolerated it right away but cut it out later because of weight gain. 3) Can I have SCD mayo? If not, what stage? SCD mayo is mainly oil and eggs so yes. I made it without the pepper and not too spicy at stage 1. 4) How long should I stay on stage 1? Everyone is different. I advanced very slowly and did not try any raw fruits until almost a year on SCD. I used nut butters fairly early on but not nut flours. 5) And I should add a new food within the stage every ___ days? I did 1, maybe 2 a week but no more than that. 6) I would GREATLY appreciate some good recipes for stage 1!!! I really stayed with the basics for a long time. I cooked, peeled and sometimes pureed fruits and veggies. It was pretty restrictive but I believe going slowly on SCD is a good thing. I stayed pretty close to meats, cooked veggies and fruits, yogurt, nut butters and eggs for a long time. I still do.I loved the soups and always had a pot going. My favorite (still is) was Misty' zucchini-basil soup. I also loved cooking an acorn squash and mashing it with butter and a little honey, and making a " banana split " with frozen banana, dripped yogurt, applesauce, nut butter. Frozen bananas were my dessert. I often made a soufle with eggs and pureed veggies. I started with the intro and redid the intro for a few days several times if I was feeling like things were not going well. I really think the intro is an important part and would not skip it, especially if one is starting over. I still eat like this but since I have been on the go a lot, I am using my freezer supply of soups. I just think keeping it plain and simple and going slowly is a good approach. Guest guest
Hi ! I think PJ covered a lot of good points. I wanted to give you the direct link to the pecanbread site where they list recipes for the stages. It definitely pays to keep things simple- especially in the beginning when you are trying to see what you can and cannot tolerate. My favorite standbys for stage 1 were apple/pear sauce, banana pancakes and chicken bread (you can make it with pork too). I still eat these! http://pecanbread.com/new/recipes.html > > > > > > 6) I would GREATLY appreciate some good recipes for stage 1!!! > > > > > > Thanks all, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
