Guest guest
OK, First, blessings of all sorts to our family members and friends. I couldn't have asked for better support/help than my 22 y.o. daughter, Rie and my beau, Austin. Surgery was Wed. 6/22. Anesthesiologist was wonderful, gave me a " little dose " of Versed (my favorite drug in the entire world--speaking as an ER nurse who gives it for orthopedic reductions all the time!) Anyways, she gave it to me just pre-op, so I was in la-la land from the get go. My OS let be bring in my own cd's, so I took 4 compilations of my fav music in with me. Post op....immediately began throwing up. I'm very susceptible to narcotics and had told my OS I REALLY like my nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS) like aleve....he said none until a week post op due to swelling issues. Well, I began vomiting immediately in post-op. Turns out I had a morphine IV pump for pain. Morphine has a high incidence of vomiting when given too fast...apparently ANY at all for me it too fast. So, they changed it to dilaudid. I continued to puke. told them to just get rid of it and give me Ativan (like valium) the nurses had to educate the OS on what Ativan was and he was concerned about the respiratory depression but came around. That was wonderful. During the vomiting, since the only thing that worked well was to alternate the Zofran thru the IV and then Tigan Suppositories, they had to keep ordering the supp. from the pharmacy..... " Oh, it's not here yet.... " Finally that came up. Had a new nurse who was being trained, so everything was done by the book (not always the best idea in my opinion!) Thank goodness my daughter was there thru the nights (and at 24 weeks pregnant was really a trooper) Came home Friday. Bruising on the cheeks and into the neck cuz of the vomiting. Rubber bands broke the first day and the OS will put them on Monday at his office Pain is ok, I checked with another dr. who is covering for my OS and small amounts of motrin are ok, so I'm alternating that and liquid tylenol. BTW....spend the extra money and get the name brand stuff.....the off brand stuff is yucky! I'm set up on the sofa which reclines. a little pharmacy next to me. Splint is wired in...seems to be sewn into the cheeks? I had upper and lower jaws done. I'm really hoping my bite is wonderful once this is done. I had it done becuase my lower teeth struck the roof of my mouth and were becoming more and more crowded. All consulted stated that they would break off if corrective surgery weren't done. The md that assisted my md said, when he saw me post op, first thing " Oh, you will be so happy, this will take 10 years off! " My first thought was F**K YOU, there is no way I am so vain that I would endure this much pain for taking time off my looks. PUNK KID! I am 46 years old, plan on keeping my teeth another 50 years and would never do this for looks. What a chump. ok, an exhausting morning, I ate some cream of wheat (what a gourmet cook my guy is!) took my meds, checked email for the first time in 5 days and now back to bed. Thanks for all those who went before and left pearls of wisdom for us to follow....hugs to all those family members....TTYL.........Love, Connie
Guest guest
connie - it's nice to hear from you! sorry about the puking - i only threw up once and it was terrible ( i thought my splint was somehow attached to my cheeks as well...but after a couple days realized that the swelling had gotten my cheeks all stuck up on my hooks. in a couple of days i'm sure it will be better ) oh - and the ice packs they gave me in the hospital were ridiculous! like two big bricks or something. the zip-n-squeeze ice packs were the best. i had two of them - so one was always frozen and ready to go. i actually never used the heat...i just never felt i needed it. keep up the good healing - i'm glad to hear you're doing so well ) -becky
Guest guest
Hi Connie, Hugs. I'm on the other side, too. Sorry, you had so much problems with vomiting - I usually do, but luckily I didn't. My surgery was Thursday and know what you mean about family. Much husband has been my best nurse. I chuckled when you said you had your pharmacy beside you - as I do too. Hopefully things are getting better for you. Shirley
Guest guest
Hi Connie, Thank you for the fabulous post! It is really helpful to see the pre op medications that can help get you through that more stressful time. I am taking note of it. I am sorry about the vomiting. That would be awful to endure. Did they give you something in the OR to help stem the vomiting? I was hoping that would help post op. I won't be on Morphine post op (allergic) - are there other meds they can use post op?. I like Demerol (about the only pain med I can still use). Sorry, I wouldn't usually ask the med questions, but since you are a nurse, I was hoping you could shed some light on this. Anyway, I am glad you are home and have set yourself up comfortably in your reclining sofa. I love my recliner post op for anytime. It is more comfortable than most other positions. The recliner used to be DH's chair, now it is mine mine mine! lol Take care and post as you feel up to it. Hugs, Fran > OK, > > First, blessings of all sorts to our family members and friends. Guest guest
Connie - Congratulations on your successful surgery! Nice to hear from you; yes, I like Versed too. I've had it several times - for pre-op. I've never had morphine; your vomiting episodes scare me. Thank you for sharing that info. I'm pre-ortho & pre-op. Braces (part #1 - spacers and brackets) go on in about four weeks; part #2 (archwires and bands) is two weeks later. My surgery will be next summer - OD is aiming for ten months. Take care. ~~ Diane > OK, > > First, blessings of all sorts to our family members and friends.
