Hi,

My surgeon retired at the end of July; the support group continued

independently. I've never attended a single meeting. I did keep thinking that I

would go but somehow always either forgot or had something else already

planned. In other words, it sounded like a good idea but was never a high

priority for me.

This group has provided the support that I've needed in a form that's very

usable for me. Literally everything I've ever wondered about or questioned or

worried about concerning my WLS has been discussed openly and in depth --

almost always prior to point the where I'd actually formed the question in my

own mind. I don't post often but read regularly.

Wonderful group!

My heartfelt gratitude to everyone who does participate - those who answer the

questions and those who ask.

Amy

Hi

Im 2 years out. I go to a local suport group that has alot of

new posties, I also go to one for wls 2 or more years out. I

love the inthuasim of the new posties, thye keep me focused on

where ive been and why I did this in the first place.

The 2 year or more out group has alot of folks struggling with

weight gain. I asked them why they left the original post-op

group. The responce was they didnt want to hear about the protein

or all the im so excited stuff from new posties. My responce was

well since your strugling maybe you should go back and catch some

of the excitement.

The orignal group helps me much more than the advanced one.

,

I have been going to a live support group since 3 mo out. It took me

a while to find one and I had to drive 1.5 hrs just to get there, but

I feel that it was well worth it. At the time of my surgery Jan 2000

(gee creeping up on 4 yrs now!)live groups were in short supply. I

decided to start a local support group in my town when I started

meeting others that had had or were interested in having the surgery.

We started out with 4 of us in April of 2002 and have grown to more

than 60. We have our own little egroup here (heartofdixie2) on yahoo

for folks in our local area (Auburn/Opelika, AL). So, to answer your

question...I get support from lots of different places. A lot has

come from the egroups (several different ones over the years), much

from my far away live group, so much more from my little local group

and of course my loving family (my son has also had WLS). I find

that watching the newbies come through my local group keeps me

focused. It is sometimes alot of work, but so worth it in the end.

Since starting our local group there have been many others in this

general area to start groups. I tell the folks that come to our

meetings that if they don't like it in our group (for whatever reason)

to check out the others until they find one they can stick with.

Can't remember where I read it or if I just heard it on the egroups,

but as I understand it, those of us that stick with a support group

(live or cyber) do better than those who try to do it all by

themselves. So far, so good...lost 202 lbs and holding it down pretty

good. Up a little one week and back down the next...just like

a " normal " person (whatever that is, LOL!). Happy! Happy! Joy! Joy!
