Guest guest
Hi I don't know if 92 is really bad for cholesterol. I went an got the results from my last blood test and my husband's. The lab reports say the reference interval numbers should be 100 - 199. Mine is 116 and my husband's is 101. The doctors are very happy with my husband's number and mine but mine are higher. Guest guest
Very low cholesterol can be as dangerous as very high cholesterol. As someone else said, cholesterol is naturally occurring, and is in fact absolutely essential to human health. Among other things, it provides structure support to cell walls, it is part of the bile produced by the liver for fat digestion in the intestines, and it is the chemical basis of most hormones (like estrogen). Your surgeon will know whether your cholesterol is low enough to worry about. I came across one web site that talked about people with hypocholesterolemia (hypo = low), the opposite of hypercholesterolemia (hyper = high), and seemed to define it as blood cholesterol below 50. The old recommendations were that cholesterol should be above about 150, but in the past year or so the recommendation changed. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find the new lower level. At 92, your surgeon may just tell you to eat more meat, fish, eggs, and shrimp. :-) (How often do people get to hear *that* from a doctor?) One web site recommended fish oil supplements, either omega-3 fatty acid or omega-6 fatty acid, I forget which. Here is some info I found on low cholesterol: * While high cholesterol levels may be indeed be warning signs of many health issues, it does not logically follow then that all cholesterol is bad and you should try to wipe out any cholesterol in your body. We need cholesterol to build and maintain cell membranes, for production of sex hormones, to aid in the manufacture of bile (which helps digest fats), and to convert sunshine to vitamin D. Cholesterol is also important for the metabolism of fat soluble vitamins, including vitamins A, D, E, and K. Check out How Stuff Works: Cholesterol <http://www.howstuffworks.com/cholesterol.htm> to find out more about the role of cholesterol in our bodies and the many important functions it performs. * also * According to a web page on cholesterol testing from the the Discovery Health Channel <http://health.discovery.com/encyclopedias/1129.html>, abnormally low levels of cholesterol may indicate: • hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid gland • liver disease • malabsorption • inadequate absorption of nutrients from the intestines • malnutrition * Mark
