Guest guest
I went to my OS today. He dropped a bomb and told me he has looked at my models and has decided I need to have my upper jaw advanced in addition to the lower jaw. That made me speechless for a couple of minutes. Then I thought it over and realized it wasn't a bad thing. Although my over bite is so bad that my bottom teeth hit the roof of my mouth and you can't even see my bottom teeth, my chin is so pronounced that I look like Robin sister :-) So, with the advancement of the upper jaw as well, my entire profile will really change. Now I am in high gear. 6/6---OD for new models and OS for more xrays. 6/15 OD for heavier wires. 6/16 OS for completion of the paper work, etc. 6/20 OD for hooks. surgery on 6/22, discharge on 6/24. I'm always borderline anemic, so the OS recommended I start iron vitamins. We talked about me donating a unit of blood, just in case, but he told me he hasn't had anyone need blood in over a decade. Any ideas on that? Getting nervous AND excited. Hugs, Connie G.
Guest guest
Hi Connie, Sorry to hear you'll need both jaws. They thought if I had braces I might not need uppper, but I'm having both. Sounds like you're only 5 days behind me. I have surgery June 17th. > I'm always borderline anemic, so the OS recommended I start iron vitamins. I will be on iron the for about 3 weeks before the surgery. My surgeon wants me to donate a unit of blood (which may be impossible with my lousy veins and having had a mastectomy on arm with good vein). But my surgeon doesn't think he'll need it. Surgeons usually use hypotensive anesthesia (lower blood pressure), which reduces blood loss. I am having some other surgery on turbinates (nose), so I think they just want to have the blood just in case. Shirley
Guest guest
I asked my surgeon about that at my appointment and he said he prefers patients not to donate blood. He said they rarely use it and it is a waste of the blood you need in your system for the surgery. He also said by the time the get all the paperwork and such together if you need a transfusion they will already be giving you someone elses blood. I am also directed to take 3 iron pills a day for the next 3 weeks till surgery. About getting both jaws done--I will also be getting them both moved plus a genio. I figure if I am gonna be knocked out and feeling lousy anyways, then just go ahead and make everything as perfect as possible, even if that means extra cuts and moves and plates and screws. I dont think i will be able to tell the difference when I am miserable the week after! > Hi Connie, Sorry to hear you'll need both jaws. Guest guest
Hi Connie My mother is anemic and the doctors have always classified me as borderline anemic too. My doctor told me to start taking for a month ahead of the surgery iron supplements that are called Feri-Sequels. They are over the counter so no prescription needed. I take one a day at bedtime. Despite the fact that they are quite big and colored the strangest green I have ever seen, I actually think they are quite good supplments because usually iron tablets give you constipation and bloat your stomach or you're body doesn't assimilate them very well (sorry for the details). I have not had any of these problems with these tablets. For some reason I also just feel more reassured by taking them, as if my blood were getting stronger. Weird psychology I guess:-) My doctor is also not taking my blood before surgery. This really varies from doctor to doctor. My previous oral surgeon wanted to absolutely take blood before hand. I guess it depends on how conservative the doctor is. My previous doctor told me that very rarely do they ever end up using the blood, which is frustrating because the blood later gets thrown out because it can't be used for donation purposes for some reason. Either way, i would nor recommend having units of blood drawn later than two weeks before the surgery. Your body needs the time to regenerate. Anyway, hope this helps. Sara > I went to my OS today.
