At first the diet really helped; I felt much better and had more regularity and almost no blood. I never did the intro diet, but since I wasn't severely sick at the time I figured that would be ok. I also never did the yogurt since I can't do milk products. You can make delicious coconut milk yogurt - recipe in the files under probiotics. > I recently tried Friendship Farmer's cheese and that wasn't good. Other than these things, I stayed on the diet religiously. The last few months though, I have been getting worse and now I have stomach aches and blood often, though no diarrhea. I'm still getting the remicade infusions. > > I thought of a few changes: a few weeks ago I did the intro diet for 3 days and that helped a little with the stomach aches, but the blood never really went away. Also, I just ordered some SCDophilus from GI pro health. Keep eating plenty of broths - it sounds like you may have gotten into a 3 month flare and just spiralled downhill from there - or something like that. You may also be having a yeast flare up as sometimes happens. It will take some time to clear up the B issue, unfortunately but broths are great for the inflammation - because of the gelatin. I'd keep eating really simple foods - your easiest foods for a few weeks and see what happens. But it can be very hard sometimes to clear up the bugs that proliferate from the 3 month flare if you don't nip them immediately in the bud. Just as a warning. I got stuck in that rut too for a while. I'd also suggest if the broth and easy foods alone are not sufficient staying away from honey and fruits high in natural sugars for a while. No dates, for example. berries, lemon, lime are better. Mara > > I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I have been keeping a detailed food journal from the start. Any advice? Guest guest
Hi Everyone, When you make the broths, be sure to use the knuckle bones for beef/lamb broth and the feet from the chicken for chicken broth. These parts contain the most gelatin that infuses into the broth while cooking. I have a recipe that calls for the hoof but I can’t do it... I draw the line at the hoof! The best recipe I’ve found for stocks is in Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon. This is a super cookbook as it teaches how to make everything homemade and why to make it this way for the most healthful dishes. It works extremely well along with the diet. And it would let you start to get off your other meds and avoid their bad side-effects. n-- ______________________________A funny, touching gift book for cat lovers. Guest guest
Hi, Joe, I also have Crohns (2 yrs dx in Nov) and cannot do milk products. I started the diet last Nov after switching GI drs and hardly being able to function due to severe anemia. This past weekend, a flare hit me like a 18 wheeler. I am still not sure why/how it happened, but my guess is antibiotics that I took 6 weeks ago for strep throat and . My inflammtory markers were so high after this flare that my GI is putting me back on medication (had been taking pentasa until Jan/Feb). This week, I still feel like my iron is low (which I think happens when there's inflammation) although I think I had been doing quite well until this past week. When I came across your post, I realized I feel like you do. I keep a food journal, been extremely slow in trying new foods. People around me are amazed how well I stick to the diet (though I am sure illegals sneak in every once in awhile). I used to run and was training for my first half marathon last October when I started having issues in August (pre SCD) and I haven't run since--haven't had the energy. After coming across the diet in Nov, I felt tons better but I have never gotten back the energy to run on top of living. Does this make sense? I figured it was because of my low carb and calorie intake due to the diet but now I wonder if I have been just " skimming " being healthy these past months. On Monday, I will go back to my dr to be put back meds but I plan on discussing the low energy issue. When I look back at my food journal, I notice growth (could barely handle a 3+billion SCDophilus pill and now can handle 10+ without issue) but it hasn't been without its bumps and now this " mountain " of a flare up. I have been debating on whether the diet is worth it if I have to do medicine anyway. I have heard about the 3,6,9,12 month regressions and didn't believe it applied to me bc never had any problems--but this flare up occurs right about that time--8/9 months. I guess I am learning that this will not be a smooth ride and that Crohns is probably one of the worst digestive diseases there is-- Let me know if you think about quitting or continuing the diet and your reasons. Good luck! I believe flares can be related to various stages of die-off of bad gut microbes. Here is what Elaine said: http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/kb/flares.htm And you are correct, Crohn’s can be a debilitating disease, as I have experienced.
