Guest guest
Hi everyone, Let's all rejoice that I'm not dead (OK, most of you will rejoice!) as I almost ran off the road a little while ago. I was driving along back from a satisfying low-carb lunch and lstening to my usual noonish NPR program, Day to Day. Chadwick was interviewing Dr. Janet Pregler of UCLA med school about the new food pyramid, the de-emphasis on carbs, etc. Yeah, yeah, we all know that, ho hum, I am thinking. Then jokingly said something like " Everyone loves Atkins so much, why don't you just make that the new food pyramid? " She responded by talking about studies that, over a year's time, showed no difference in weight lost or regained between Atkins and the traditional low calorie diets. Then she said something like (and this was run-off-the-road time): " ACTUALLY, WE NOW BELIEVE THAT THERE IS NO DIET WHICH CAN PERMANENTLY RETURN SOMEONE TO A NORMAL WEIGHT ONCE THEY HAVE BECOME OBESE. " I could not believe it. I never thought I would hear a health professional say such a thing. Of course, I wanted her to go on to say that wls is the only real treatment - but she didn't. Still, it's a pretty amazing thing to hear on the radio after lunch on a sunny Tuesday in Indy! You can hear the interview if you go to npr.org, click on Day to Day, click on Listen to Individual Stories (Oct. 1) and then scroll down to Rebuilding the Food Pyramid. hugs, Ann
Guest guest
Ann, Thanks for a pointer to an interesting story. I listened to it very carefully here at my desk, and here's my transcription of Dr. Pregler's remarks on weight loss, which came right at the end of the interview: " Once people are overweight, it's very difficult to have them lose weight, and in fact, we have a lot of data that [shows] no diet will help most people return to a normal weight once they've become overweight. " I might have almost run off the road if I'd heard that too. Dr. Phil, are you listening?? :-) Z Open RNY 09/17/01 http://www.ziobro.us incredible sentence to hear Hi everyone, Let's all rejoice that I'm not dead (OK, most of you will rejoice!) as I almost ran off the road a little while ago.
