Guest guest
Hi , Yes the diet will work with meds and many of us do take them. The diet was not designed to replace medication and Elaine said it is important to stay on medication. However, some people after being on the diet have elected to stop their medication after being symptom-free for quite some time. This decision has in most cases been against medical advice. The diet was never intended to be in conflict with medication or medical advice. It is wonderful that your husband has experienced such a great improvement on SCD. I would encourage him to stay on it as it seems to be doing him a lot of good. Being on meds is not a reason to stop SCD. PJ > > My husband has been doing the SCD diet for 4 months and it has been like a miracle for him!! He was diagnosed with Crohn's disease 6 years ago. He has had 2 resections, 3 srtictureplasties, an abcess,a fistula and probably more stuff I can't remember. He has tried sulfazalazine, endocort, prednisone, imuran, remicade, humira, methotrexate, and tysabri. Nothing has worked for long. Some have actually made things worse. In Feb. he ended up in the ER with pain and a 104 fever from inflammation. That is when he started the diet. He now has mostly normal bowel movements and no pain! He is off of all medicines and feeling good. Well today he went for a colonoscopy. It was the first one he has had since his resection a year ago. Many parts of his colon looked normal, but there were some parts that showed colitis and he has a partial blockage with active disease in that area. The Dr. wants to put him on Imuran and Cimzia ASAP so that his blockage does not get worse. Should he go back on meds? Will the diet keep working if he adds meds? If he takes immunosuppressants, can the diet still heal his immune system? Thanks in advance for any advice. I really appreciate the this yahoo group. Guest guest
Hey ! I've taken Cimzia before and since it's an injection, it should not interfere with SCD. I can't speak for Imuran- it's one of the few I actually haven't tried. Necessary medications can work in conjunction with the diet. I take some oral stuff (like Prednisone that I've been trying to taper off for years and years) that have illegals in them, but I am still able to progress. As for your question about the impact of suppressing his immune system with this diet... I'm not sure? I don't *think* that would have an effect on the bacteria. Does anyone know for sure? I hope this helps! I am sure someone can advise you on the Imuran -Joanna SCD 9/2009, Crohn's 1992, 30mg Prednisone > > My husband has been doing the SCD diet for 4 months and it has been like a miracle for him!! Guest guest
I am in the same boat as your husband. My doc recommended both Cimzia and Imuran today. My colonoscopy showed inflammation again in the ileum. I will go on them because they will help me get better and I need something, the diet isn't doing it alone. However, I didn't go slowly on the diet either. I am re-starting the diet today using the Pecanbread stages. Which, I have some questions for the group on that too! But, what I have a problem with is, when would I know to come off the drugs once I start feeling better. I am afraid of coming off of them and getting sick again. > > My husband has been doing the SCD diet for 4 months and it has been like a miracle for him!! Guest guest
I don't think anyone " knows " when to come off medications. We all would like to, but it is not medically recommended. The point is to do what you can to feel better. We are told IBD is not curable but a chronic condition. There are people who seem to be healed on SCD but it has not been confirmed by standard medical research. Yet the theory of SCD- to stop the cycle makes sense and this is supported by medical research on gut flora...but SCD itself has not been thoroughly investigated. The reason being that a controlled study on diet would be difficult, expensive, and there is not profit in it. Still, many of us are willing to give it a try and reap the benefits. The anecdotes of people who have stopped medication are from those who feel perfectly well, and after a long while of feeling ok, they just slowly give up the meds, and it does not seem to make a difference. At this point, their doctors are not OK with that, but they take the risk anyway and are doing well. So there really is no specific time to " stop meds " , or way to know when. I think people just gradually slow down on taking them if they have had no symptoms for a while.
