since i already had sleep apnea and was on a CPAP for years, i just needed to

supply my surgeon with a copy of the sleep study test for the pulmonoligist

(sorry not sure of the spelling). if i wasn't able to give them the report i

too would have had to have another sleep study done. thank goodness i didn't

need to go through that added expense or time. since surgery i have been able

to get off the CPAP machine....yippeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!

Hello,

Im hoping someone can offer a little bit of advice. Years ago, as a

teen, I had an overbite, no big deal, had braces, etc.. Now years

later, I realize mostly from society, that there exists other problem

areas with my face. For instance, it is long, my chin is about a 1/4

of an inch longer (vertically) than the other two-thirds of my face

giving a long facial appearance. Which is my biggest complaint and

causes me a lot of grief. However, I have also been told by two

cosmetic surgeons, that I have a very slight hemifacial microsomia.

Or, at least a mild level of assymmetry which woulfd be considered

abnormal. Given these two problems which I would like to rectify as

best as I can/could, would anyone suggest that this is simply a

cosmetic issue which could be addressed by a cosmetic surgeon, or

should I seek a orthognathic one? Furthermore, if the latter, can

treatment be covered by insurance? Thank you.

I would start with an orthodontist and/or an oral surgeon, because I

would be concerned about whether there are any functional problems

associated with your circumstance. Are you wearing down your teeth? Are

you damaging your joints in any way? Those are two good questions to

start with.

I don't know about the insurance issues. I can tell you that many

insurance companies try hard and persistently to deny claims for

coverage of orthognathic surgery on the basis that the procedure is

purely cosmetic. If only to combat that claim, I'd start with the

dental specialists. (Sleep apnea can be another related problem, but I

think -- but don't know -- it's usually associated with short lower

jaws, rather than long ones.)

Satisfied patients have used oral and maxillofacial surgeons; satisfied

patients have used plastic surgeons. I think you want to find someone

who will match your needs and answer your questions, be it of whatever

specialty.
