Guest guest
did you ask the ortho about the fit/rotation? I have heard some amount of rotation can be normal but not sure how much. Possibly different bands differ as well. We have a Hanger band and my sons has never rotated at all. after an adjustment once it infringed upon one eye a bit so I asked the ortho about it and she suggested adding a strip of mole skin and that fixed the problem till he grew a bit more. I do think you need to have the fit evaluated if it is bothering his eyes or ears, and it does sound like it may be rotating a bit much, but it may be that he just needs to "grow into it" I'm sure someone with a starband could give you better advice . good luck le From: skazinsky <skazinsky@...>Subject: Is the helmet supposed to rotate?Plagiocephaly Date: Sunday, January 3, 2010, 9:18 AM Hi! My name is Margarita. My son is 8 months old.The right side of his head is a little bit flat and his left forehead is a little bit flat as well. The ears are a little bit off.His asimetry is 4mm. The doctor recommended a helmet, because of the flattening. I am not sure that he really needs it. Most people don't even notice it if I don't tell them.Anyway we got the helmet- Starband - 5 days ago. Now I constantly worry that this helmet is harming him instead of helping him. The helmet is constantly rotating. It doesn't exactly cover his eyes , but it tips forward a lot and goes very close to the eyes. It is also very tight on the left cheek and almost touching the left eye. It's loose on the right cheek and when my son moves his head it covers his right ear.He also has torticollis and has to do lots of excersizes involving turning his head to the left , but every time he turns to the left the helmet almost covers his eye. I feel like the torticollis is getting worse because of the helmet. Is this possible or I am getting paranoid.I'll be happy to hear your oppinion.Best Regards, Margarita
Guest guest
The amount of rotating will depend a little bit upon the head shape. 4 mm is not much. Does your son also have brachy? The STARbands do rotate a little bit at first until the baby fully grows into them, but there is such a thing as too much rotation. Our ortho put a small piece of padding (about the thickness of a penny and the size of a thumb) into the helmet and this stopped it from rotating over the ear. The over the forehead rotation tends to occur with brachy because it's flat in the back and there's nothing to keep it from sliding up. This is why I asked you about the brachy. Our ortho just cut high enough above the eyes so that the helmet didn't cover them. We would occasionally bring the helmet back down, but after a few weeks and the placement of the padding, the sliding on the forehead also stopped. Also, with plagio, one side is the holding point so it would be expected to be more fitted than the other side. It's hard to know whether yours is normal rotation or whether the fit isn't good.
