So I am having my surgery soon(July 19) and I have a few questions for you all.

I have already

asked my surgeon, I just want some reassurance.

Just so you know I am only having my lower jaw moved forward.

How is feeling in the lower jaw afterwards? My surgeon said that there will be

numbness and

a possibility of never getting feeling back. How often does that happen and how

long does it

last?(Surgeon said it varies a lot)

Anything in particular that seems to go down well after being blended?

I think that's it for now, I will be sure to come back if I have any questions.

Hi Garrett,

I am almost 2 years post-op now, and still have some numbness on one

side of my chin and the other side is about 90% good. My OS said it

can take up to 2 years to come back, it looks like my isn't going

to. But I have gotten used to how it feels.

As for the blender question, besides chocolate milk shakes of course,

for a meal, I liked chili. It and Marie Callendars potato cheese

soup. If only having only the lower done, you will most likely have

soft foods after a week or so.

Hi Garrett!

I can confirm the bit about the numbness. I had surgery on the 24 of

June and have no feeling whatsoever in my lower lip and chin. I have

full feeling on the sides of my face, ie: from the corners of my

lips back towards my ears. The pain is not too bad with the lower

advancement as compared to the upper lefort1 that I also had done.

In terms of getting the feeling back, I can tell you a bit from my

own experience. I lost the feeling on the left side of my lip and

chin due to having my impacted wisdom teeth out 8 years ago. This is

the same nerve involved as with lower advancement. After a year I

began to have tingling, sensitivity to hot and cold, as well as

little " shocks " . At about 2 years this progress peaked and I had

almost all of my feeling back. This particular nerve takes a long

time to recover, so you have to be very patient. I am concerned that

after this surgery, with the previous damage from my wisdom teeth I

wont get feeling back on the left side. But I know that I just have

to wait and see.

I also knw from having no feeling there for a year, that I got used

to it and became very good at drinking, eating despite the lack of

sensation. Its a pain in the butt, but it's doable.

On the food question, I have to say that one very good alternative

to all the sweet drinks after surgery is blended lentil soup. The

lentils blend very smooth and have lots of protein and fiber which

is definitely lacking in all of those " meal replacement " drinks. Its

also very tasty and can be bought premade at the supermarket.

Take care.
