I understand your confusion, Jackie! I have a feeling that the health care changes will only increase our confusion. I've been frustrated for years about the lack of dental care available for adults. When I was working as a nurse-midwife, we had so many young women in the clinic whose teeth were in terrible shape. Most of them were on Medicaid for pregnancy only & dental care was covered only if the problem affected the pregnancy. So if a woman had an abscess that was affecting her ability to eat, Medicaid would cover the treatment of the abscess, the cheapest way--antibiotics & pull the tooth. Not a root canal & crown. And we had to provide documentation, jump through hoops, etc. No one seemed to get the fact that a young woman with missing & broken teeth would have trouble getting a job, would have another reason for low self-esteem, be more likely to be in a dependent relationship

with possible abuse, etc. etc. etc. Then a few years ago, research found a strong correlation with poor dental health & preterm labor! Just as poor dental health is associated with heart disease. Now we spend a ton of money trying to prevent preterm birth & treating premies after they are born; wouldn't it be wonderful if we could spend less money on dental care & get many more benefits? Makes sense, but I don't expect to see it in my lifetime. We've always known preterm birth occurs much more frequently in low income women; it's been blamed on lack of access to medical care & poor nutrition. But we still saw it in our clinic population, who mostly got early care, had WIC, food stamps & other food programs. I'm convinced that bad teeth & gums are the #1 culprit. Of course it's not the cause of every preterm birth & higher-income women also have preterm labor. (President

Kennedy & Jackie lost a baby that was born too early; he probably would have survived with today's technology.) But I'll bet it's the biggie. Sorry for the rant!

I guess I was wrong. It isn't Medicare that covers the dentures it is a program that Wisconsin has. There are dental clinics going up all over Wisconsin for the low income. It is free to those who qualify however there is again a long waiting list. We do not have enough dentists who handle Medicare. There is one right around the cornor from me that would accept me but I had to walk in first and have a painful tooth ache to get on the list. It is really confusing.

Wisconsin has what is Called Forward/badger care. They, I am told, handle the problem I had but again it takes a long time to be approved and then the waiting list for the available dentist. Sometimes you have to really travel a long distance. And then they can turn you down. So with the help of a very good dentist and a family member we came up with a payment plan that works for me. Sorry for the confusion, I am confused too.

My sweet son is getting a divorce from his wonderful wife. So sad. 3 beautiful children involved. My heart is breaking.

The meds I am on, as everyone knows, does a number on the teeth. I finally took the plunge and said Do it Doc. And he did. All gone. Waiting for the replacements. Chose to go without for a few weeks so hopefully they fit well. It has been 6 weeks. ARGH

Looking to get my own place (where it is less controlling) . I love the man I am with but I believe he is holding my progress with walking and being independent back. Oh well.

Other than that all is well. Hanging in there and dealing with the trials. I have to.

I would love to know where you ladies get your wonderful quotes and how you add them to the end.

I just realized you thought you were ranting---lol---I thought you were being informative and I love it when you, all of you, tell me things. No jokes I am serious.

Rose I agree with everything you said. I went to the dentist after my stay in the Nursing home. He drilled one tooth and told me my teeth were fine. ( he was covered by my medical assistance program in Wisconsin ) A week later I had a kick ass toothache. I went back to my dentist ( not covered and trusted) He worked on 3 teeth and did a cleaning that was so needed.

Anyway after 3 years of him "mending" my teeth he could do no more. Which leaves me where I am today. Toothless for the time being. (gummy grin) Monday is the day !!!!!

I don't really know if the dentist was just inept or if he was doing the min. for the insurance. I don't care anymore for me but there are hundreds of people who go to this dentist. We are from a very low income area. Some times reminds me of "deliverance".

Does anyone have an idea to what could be done ? My anger arises when I think about it and not everyone has someone like myself that is able to help get proper care.

any advice would be welcome.

On the right upper side of screen where it says options ...click... and then click on Mail options...then it will bring up another page and you can add something to Signature on the upper left hand side. I found my quote on a site I visited but if you google quotes you'll find all kinds. Rose You are still the Rant Queen.  You get a 10 on  everything, if only I could be so good:)I have a rant I'm almost ashamed to do, but here it goes, as it's been on my mind, and maybe I will feel better if I do?

OK last week I went to Dallas for the Kay Seminar, and it almost killed me, I couldn't make it to every event, and felt like crap just trying to make it.  I meet a wonderful friend about 6 years ago in Dallas in MK, a Nurse, and she is always my roomy now, and pushes me all over in my wheelchair:)

my rant, at the Airport, the cab van drops us not to close to check in, why because someone in the van (yes a friend) gets on his case about how were in a hurry, so he is not, I'm sure you get the picture, then whispers about how he couldn't go any slower, but he did.  So I put my luggage in the wheel chair and push it to check in, this " friend " of mine has always told me not to worry, someone will always help push me in the wheel chair I love so much, not!  So while pushing me, up an incline, in 5 " heels starts complaining, why didn't ask someone to help me, and her friend (not sure mine) states how someone from the airlines always pushes her grandfather when he comes to visit, thanks for the comparison, NOT.  they continue to rant and complain, (thinking back I should of gotten out of the chair and pushed the dam thing myself, I can do this, but am very slow) then they push me up to some other women we know, well not all the way up, and now comes the drama, one stomps off to call her husband, while the other one says she needs some down time, I'm like WHAT, ARE YOU KIDDING, WHO IS THE ONE " WALKING " AWAY!!   I'm the one sitting in the Dam wheelchair HELLO?? 

of course now I feel just wonderful, so I stroll up to the check in to make sure they know it's my chair, and the lady asked me for my ticket, I was so upset I couldn't find it, and just started crying right there, she was so nice she came around the counter and told me to take my time.  She got me all taken care of, and I strolled to the front of the line, and sat there crying, do you think that any of my " friends " came to check on me, He-- No. I called my son and asked him to meet me at the airport as I was to ride home with these wonderful " friends " , got on the plane, and yes it only gets better, betcha you wonder how?  Well no one says a word to me getting on the plane, but guess what happens when we get off.  first I ask the Stewardess to call ahead for someone to push me to baggage, I get off and am sitting in my chair, and out comes my " friend " offering to push me now, WHAT..............

I told her NO I have someone coming to push me, and she asks, " are you sure " (NO I'd love to be treated like a second rate person again, it was so much fun the first time)  I told her NO just GO, she then said, OK well meet you in baggage claim, I said Don't Wait as my Son is coming to get me, and she was appalled, why did you call him,  you are going back with us!  (not on your life honey)  I told her I was fine, and I didn't need her help, so just go!  I got my bags put them in the chair and meet my son, and cried half the way home.  She has been calling and leaving messages to talk to me since, that was Sunday, really I don't have anything to say.   

Did I mention I HATE that Chair!!   OK I feel better, but feel bad, as it's nothing compared to just dx with this crap in her heart, I'm sorry Jess, and know your in my prayers, and I will get over this too.

I guess I was wrong.  It isn't Medicare that covers the dentures it is a program that Wisconsin has.  There are dental clinics going up all over Wisconsin for the low income.  It is free to those who qualify however there is again a long waiting list.  We do not have enough dentists who handle Medicare.  There is one right around the cornor from me that would accept me but I had to walk in first and have a painful tooth ache to get on the list.  It is really confusing.

Wisconsin has what is Called Forward/badger care.  They, I am told, handle the problem I had but again it takes a long time to be approved and then the waiting list for the available dentist.  Sometimes you have to really travel a long distance.  And then they can turn you down.   So with the help of a very good dentist and a family member we came up with a payment plan that works for me.   Sorry for the confusion, I am confused too.

A lot going on in this ones personal life.

My sweet son is getting a divorce from his wonderful wife.  So sad.  3 beautiful children involved.  My heart is breaking.

 

The meds I am on, as everyone knows, does a number on the teeth.  I finally took the plunge and said Do it Doc.  And he did.  All gone.  Waiting for the replacements.  Chose to go without for a few weeks so hopefully they fit well.  It has been 6 weeks.  ARGH

 

Looking to get my own place (where it is less controlling).  I love the man I am with but I believe he is holding my progress with walking and being independent back.  Oh well.

 

Other than that all is well.  Hanging in there and dealing with the trials.   I have to.

First off I am sorry you had to deal with all of that. I am beginning to find out just how insensitive people can be. jenny now has a wheelchair & is willing to use it when we need it. I am finding that there are people out there who just don't seem to think. I was trying to get her into the elevator to take her up to her orthopedist for her knee and had waited patiently for the elevator to come down and as soon as the doors opened and others got off those who had arrived after us pushed right ahead to get on. I simply said thanks I guess we will wait for the next one...I am sure it will be along in a few more minutes. I was sort of blown away at the behavior of people. I am finding out that you take the good with the bad and move

forward. Hopefully your "friend" will understand what went wrong and why you needed to get help elsewhere. Stay strong and be as well as you can. Matt

I understand your confusion, Jackie! I have a feeling that the health care changes will only increase our confusion. I've been frustrated for years about the lack of dental care available for adults. When I was working as a nurse-midwife, we had so many young women in the clinic whose teeth were in terrible shape. Most of them were on Medicaid for pregnancy only & dental care was covered only if the problem affected the pregnancy. So if a woman had an abscess that was affecting her ability to eat, Medicaid would cover the treatment of the abscess, the cheapest way--antibiotics & pull the tooth. Not a root canal & crown. And we had to provide documentation, jump through hoops, etc. No one seemed to get the fact that a young woman with missing & broken teeth would have trouble getting a job, would have another reason for low self-esteem, be more likely to be in a dependent relationship with

possible abuse, etc. etc. etc. Then a few years ago, research found a strong correlation with poor dental health & preterm labor! Just as poor dental health is associated with heart disease. Now we spend a ton of money trying to prevent preterm birth & treating premies after they are born; wouldn't it be wonderful if we could spend less money on dental care & get many more benefits? Makes sense, but I don't expect to see it in my lifetime. We've always known preterm birth occurs much more frequently in low income women; it's been blamed on lack of access to medical care & poor nutrition. But we still saw it in our clinic population, who mostly got early care, had WIC, food stamps & other food programs. I'm convinced that bad teeth & gums are the #1 culprit. Of course it's not the cause of every preterm birth & higher-income women also have preterm labor. (President Kennedy

& Jackie lost a baby that was born too early; he probably would have survived with today's technology.) But I'll bet it's the biggie.
