Guest guest
Luna - I'm currently at work and when I read your comment about " You want to put prongs in my ears so that I can't move while you shoot my skull full of X-ray radiation? OK, sounds like fun! " I laughed so hard I had tears in my eyes. No one I work with really gets it - it sounds to them like I'm just at the dentist all the time. Hey, on Friday I'm supposed to have a " face bow " done...I think that's what the ortho said. From what I can surmise, it's supposed to make a model of my face so they can do a practice surgery. Has anyone had this before? What do they do? I'm not afraid...just curious. Has anyone in the June surgery group had trouble sleeping? I feel like when I try to go to sleep - I have so many thoughts about the surgery that I'm not tired anymore. I just signed up for this program at NYU Hospital called " prepare for surgery, heal faster " - there's a book, tape, and presurgical meeting to help alievate stress and anxiety. Has anyone used a service like this? Sara - you really are an inspiration! Good luck!! -becky
Guest guest
Luna, you made me laugh too! Here I am packing up the contents of my apartment (now that I'm no longer a student I get kicked out of cheap student housing:-() and when I read your comment it really msde the whole thing seem humorous. Reminded me of when my oral surgeon's assistant stuck those same prongs into my ears and said " pretend that you're looking out into the sunset on a beach. You're on holiday. " I was like, " you're kidding right? " I know he meant well but sometimes I wonder what on earth gets into their heads when they make these comments. Becky - well if I'm an inspiration it's only thanks to all the great support I've gotten on this site. I think we're all inspirations to each other:-) I am definitely having trouble sleeping. So much keeps on going through my head. Am trying to keep it cool though. We need our sleep pre-surgery! Now in terms of the face bow I'm guessing that your doctor is referring to the surgical model that I had done. I had it done twice actually, once by my ortho and once by my oral surgeon. Getting the model done is no biggie. They take a few molds of your upper and lower jaw, a few molds of your bite for the splint, they also stick these metal prongs into your ears (that Luna was referring to), actually the metal prongs are part of this box-like metal device that they use to measure the proportion between your upper and lower jaw i.e. helps them with the measurements. Not painful at all just feels weird to have this device attacked to your ears for about 3 minutes. They will also probably take xrays of your jaw and all your teeth. The model is to help them decide exactly what they will do pre- surgery in terms of how many mm's they have to move this or that left, right, up, down etc. You'll have to tell us all about this pre-surgery course you're taking at NYU Hospital. Is that where you're being operated?? I'd be interested to hear about the stress relieving exercises. Guest guest
Becky, glad I could make you laugh! You gotta keep your sense of humor about this stuff. :-D I've never heard of the face bow, but yes, I have trouble sleeping all the time from thoughts going through my mind, whether about surgery, work, or whatever other drama is consuming my life. There's lots of advice out there about how to handle it, but nothing really works for me other than taking the time to process it all. Good luck! Guest guest
Becky, I had that procedure done. For me, it was this metal contraption that stuck in my ears and went around my head and into my mouth. It made me feel like enstein! It didn't hurt AT ALL. It was just a way for measurements to be taken - exact measurements - for that practice surgery you mentioned. If nothing else ... it will make you giggle s'more! Take care, Carol > Luna - I'm currently at work and when I read your comment about " You > want to put prongs in my ears so that I can't move while you shoot my > skull full of X-ray radiation?
