Guest guest
Jen, My surgeon told me I will have one too, I think he called it a nasal gastric tube because it goes through your nose and into your stomach. Essentially the tube is for helping to pump out any blood or the such that may be in your system post surgery and ensures that you don't vomit it out. Basically, while it doesn't sound fun it's necessary and to me, seems useful. Hope I got this right. Maybe one of the post-opers has a better explanation than mine. Guest guest
I had my surgery on May 18th and i had the tube down my nose too. It really helped a lot because it kept me from throwing up. Every time I had to get up and they clamped off the tubing so I could move, I got nauseated very quickly. It did not hurt too badly having the tube removed. Mine was taken out two days after my surgery and I don't remember it hurting, but your throat will be very sore afterwards. Good luck! Guest guest
I had one during surgery and the overnight stay. Removal didn't hurt (just made me gag), but I did have an incredibly sore and dry throat from it. Aside from that, I couldn't feel the tube itself, but I could see it doing its job when I coughed. Having blood in your stomach would quickly make you nauseous, so the tube is your friend. Guest guest
i never heard of this before - but it sounds like a good idea. i remember after having my four wisdom teeth extracted vomiting from the blood in my stomach. i hope that doesn't happen after this surgery! i'll be sure to ask about the tube at my last pre-op appt. -becky > > My surgeon mentioned that there will be a stomach pump in me during > > surgery to keep blood from collecting in my stomach... is this > common? > > If you had it, did it hurt much when the tube was removed? > > > > Thanks for any info you can provide! Guest guest
Yes, that is what he called it. It certainly does sound helpful as vomiting after waking is a major concern of mine! Last time I had general I became sick and I can't imagine it to be a pleasant experience while wired shut. eww. Are you getting nervous yet? If not don't worry, I'm nervous enough for two. =) > > My surgeon mentioned that there will be a stomach pump in me during > > surgery to keep blood from collecting in my stomach... is this > common? > > If you had it, did it hurt much when the tube was removed? > > > > Thanks for any info you can provide! Guest guest
Thanks for the info Miranda! I can't say I'm looking forward to the sore throat but I guess it's all just par for the course. Happy healing! > I had my surgery on May 18th and i had the tube down my nose too. It > really helped a lot because it kept me from throwing up. Guest guest
My OS pumped out my stomach before he woke me up. The tube was down my nose. They put the tube in after I was asleep, and they took it out before I woke up. My throat was a little sore for about 2 days after surgery, and I had a little blood in the one nostril, but that was really it. I'm glad they did it because I am sure I would have felt worse after surgery if I had blood in my tummy. > My surgeon mentioned that there will be a stomach pump in me during > surgery to keep blood from collecting in my stomach... is this common? > If you had it, did it hurt much when the tube was removed? > > Thanks for any info you can provide!
