Hey :)um, do you mean because apples are more removed from the soil than grapes? all the minerals in your apples come from the soil, plants cannot produce minerals, they always come from the soil. ergo, lead can get there probably just as well as the other minerals. I don't think flora or fauna can effectively filter lead. although it is kind of heavy, maybe that helps. Although I hear tuna are pretty good at detoxing mercury. although some of the other stuff that's gathering in whales has been killing them, not sure if thats metals.

lead is not an uncommon agricultural contaminant. actually, the recommendation is only to cook bones from organic animals because of that. lead poising has been known to occur from taking supplements derived from animal bones. and generally, your not suppose to eat the flesh of animals raised near roads (lead from exhaust was/is a major contaminant of agricultural soils. and that stuff really sticks around)

I really don't know why organic animals are supposed to have less lead in their bones. maybe that would shine light on the issue.I know nothing about glass containers having lead in modern days. sheesh, don't we know better by now? some people! honestly, put the lead away. especially away from the food. (by the by, anyone else watching the fracking legislation/potential poisoning of the water supply? people are starting protests and letter writing)

best everyone, and thanks for the continual enlightenment and warnings,

Hi Mara,

Good point but still why would this apply to apple juice as well?

I think it may have to do with the glass containers that are used for storing the juice. So many brands today are owned by the same companies that I wonder which manufacturing facilities are they using and which specific companies are they using for packaging supplies?

> I was disconcerted to find there were allowable lead levels in my foodI love how these people work. I remember when I was living in the SF bay, the once fishable bay had become so polluted (largely due to the plethora of oil refineries) that extremely dangerous levels of toxins were gathering in the fish. The regulatory agencies determined a policy, and released an advisory: do not eat more than 2 fish caught from the SF bay in a month. eXcuse me? the concentrations are that dangerous that you can only eat two per month, but you still think it's a good idea to eat them at all?? gaaaaah. these people... gotta love those revolving doors with government officials and industry execs. And I bet nobody would like to hear that it is no longer safe to eat any fish out of the bay, when the #1 polluter was big oil. I bet big oil wouldn't like that policy for public relations at all.....

maybe regulators are thinking of those old expressions about sitting on a hot stove long enough and you'll get used to it, or it's more fun that poking yourself in the eye with a sharp stick, or something..

best!!

I asked the manager at Trader Joe's about the list yesterday since several of their products are on it.  He said that California has a proposition to lower the allowed lead levels in food below the federal levels.  He said that TJ's is in the process of testing their foods.  He said all of the foods listed comply with the Federal lead levels so there are at present no recalls on any of the products listed.

I was disconcerted to find there were allowable lead levels in my food and I plan to look into California's proposition more.  I figure if they think it's important to lower them, it's probably a good idea.  I'm going to try to find out some more about this.

Isn't the real question, how much lead? I asked my very good doctor awhile back about some fruit or veggie I had read about having lead

in it, and he said that all things that grow have SOME lead in them. It's a question of how much. Now, maybe 100 years ago there wouldn't have been any, but now there's always some, I guess.
