Guest guest
You know I was a fat kid and my parents sent me to WW camps every summer starting at the age of 8. They didn't work though I did have fun and met alot of new friends but gained all the weight back. My mother was the gentle one with rgard to my weight but my father always thought that tough love was the answer. he would say right to my face how fat I was and just stop eating and nothing was good enough for him. Even today losing the majority of my weight his comments are how long will she keep it off. Parents comments sometimes can be so harming to children not realizing that they really want to do good. I also realize that there is no manuel to raising children it is instincts, things we learned from our folks and basic common sense. Guest guest
I don't remember my parents telling me I was fat. But, what I remember was that whenever I wanted to try to lose weight, my mom was there for me, bringing me lunch at work at my dad's business with all of my weight watcher's stuff, or whatever, at the time. And I remember her buying me clothes that I " thought " would conceal my weight. So, if my parents had told me anything about fat, like I didn't know, it would have done absolutely no good, just made me feel worse. But, the fact that they supported me when it was my decision is a wonderful, loving memory I will cherish forever. On the other hand, kids now have a different dilemma. At least three times a week, I think I want something like cheetos (barbara's, with real blue cheese) and when I go to buy them, they're the BIG GRAB. And I just put them back because I don't want to throw half the bag out or eat the whole thing. Food is so incredibly plentiful now, I'm sure I would have been fatter. in Austin RNY April 1998
Guest guest
Don't they teach kids anything in school anymore about differentiating between advertising hype and fact? I remember learning in 6th or 7th grade to analyze ads and figure out what was likely true and likely exaggeration. My teacher really ingrained in me a huge contempt for the copywriters who pushed stuff that wasn't true or needed. I also remember learning that if there was no NEED for a particular product, the advertisers' job was to CREATE a perceived need. That's where all the " new " and " improved " taglines come from. You can sit down with your kids and show them how these " pushers " are trying to snow them. I always felt pretty proud of myself as a kid when I was able to see thru the snow jobs. Any kid can always use another helping of self-esteem........ And there are lots of ways to make learning nutrition facts fun. Ever seen the post about Coca Cola vs water? How they use it to clean corroded machines, etc?
