You'll have to find out--we have a passive helmet and go once every 4-5 weeks,

but the entire process is 4-6 months.  Seems like some bands, they go every week

or so and are done in 6 weeks--  Our place is 2 hours away; any other option was

4 or more hours so we went with the closest that I had heard good things about.

I don't mind making the drive on occasion but I wonder how often you need to go

to the clinic.

STARband does a relatively crappy job of marketing, but that's the

second most popular, I guess. By Googling, I got the mistaken

impression that my nearest provider was 3 1/2 hours away from me when

actually, I could have just gone to a nearby wheelchair store.

Look in the group's database first. Then try Googling something

general, like " orthoses " + your town, and ask around. Doctors

*should* know, but it was an occupational therapist who helped us out.

I wonder why more of the younger babies aren't in Clarren helmets.

Seems like it must be cheaper, and if you've got that much growth to

work with, wouldn't it be better to take the orthotist skill factor

right out of it? I know nothing about the relative results, though.

There are a lot of people who've had good results with STARbands and some also with Hanger bands. These are the 2nd and 3rd most popular. In my immediate area (Baltimore), most of the professionals working with plagio and brachy seem to prefer our local STARband place to the nearest CT. I don't exactly know why because I'm usually hearing it second hand from these moms who say that their PT or doctor said to go with STARcranial over CT.

Before all of the CT folks get upset, I'm not saying anything bad about CT - instead I think it's more of a reference to the quality of STARcranial in MD. So - what I'm saying is that you can get good results from a STARband as well - you just need to do your homework. You need to fine out if the ortho knows their stuff. Search the database associated with the site and look online for STARband locations and then post the question to the group to find out if anyone has had any experience.

In the end, you may decide that you'd rather drive the long distance, but this way, you can make sure that it's really the best option before making that huge committment. You'll be going once a week for adjustments and even more if there are problems.

Deciding on type of helmet/band

We will have to decide soon whether or not to get a band or helmet for our 4 month old baby (plagio). From what I have read, I have been the most impressed with the DOC band. The only problem is we live in Michigan and the closest to us is in Chicago - a 4.5 hour drive. I don't mind making the drive on occasion but I wonder how often you need to go to the clinic. If it is pretty frequent then it will probably be prohibitive to go that route, and I would have to decide to go with a product that I can find more locally. Any help would be most appreciated!

Our daughter was banded last Friday, so I can only tell you what we've been told

to expect. After the digital imaging, we went back 2 weeks later to pick up the

band. They wanted to see back in one week to check the fitting.

Assuming all goes well, we go back every 2 weeks for fittings, for up to 16

weeks.

Hope this helps!
