Guest guest
Hi holly, welcome to the group!! My names is kat im 20 and from the Uk. I dont really get on here that often but i saw your post and thought i would try to post you some info. Im sure you have had many replies already but i thought i would let you know my experience. I had braces from aged 12 up until well i still have them now, tho its just a retainer kind. I had my surgery when i was 17 - so we are one of the young 'uns as they put it. Ive read that being young when you have this surgery has its advantages as you bounce back quicker post op. I also had my wisdom teeth removed prior to jaw surgery. I had them out in the april and my jaw op was in the august (2002). From my experience i felt that although i had never had surgery before i had my wisdom teeth removed, i felt that compared to the actual jaw surgery the wisdom teeth removal was worse and i felt worse. I had swolled alot of blood and didnt have a stomach tube hense i was throwing up blood for a good few hours. jaw surgery was i know it sounds strange but alot easier and in a way pleasing. i was so excited when i was in the prep room to go into theatre that i wasnt nervous in the slightest. it was a really weird feeling!!! Elastics are what they attatch to the surgical hooks - on your braces- to keep your jaws stable. depending on what you have done and what your surgeon decides you can have elastics only, after surgery, or wires or both. I had elastics prior surgery which were tight and pleantiful at first and as the weeks pasted my ortho reduced the number of them to allow more movement. as for side affects there are to name a few. your surgeon will be able to fill you in on these. everyone is different so the side affects will be. i had some slight numbness after i had my wisdom teeth removed which is caused by nerve damage. This is still here today, though it really doesnt bother me that much. i didnt have any further numbness from my jaw surgery - well that remained anyway, which was good. After my jaw op my face from the eyes down was completley numb. however as the swelling goes down you face tends to regain feeling. it feels almost like pins and needles in your face. a tingling sensation which is a sign of regaining feeling. I will say one thing. i only found this site a week before my surgery and tho the people were really helpful and gave me SO SO much information in that week, you have an advantage as you have more time. I would use this time to find out as much as you can about your surgery and what it entails, ie, side affects, what to expect pre and post op etc. Its so helpful to go into the surgery prepared and aware of what to expect. The people in this group and site 2 are really helpful and will answer all your questions. so if you need to ask anything go ahead. dont dwell on your worries, ask and learn about them. it really is a blessing this site. i was so greatful of it both pre and post op!!!! Good luck with your wisdom teeth surgery!!!!! and if you want to contact me please feel free to do so! Take care Kind regards Kat_UK > this is my first time to post. Guest guest
Hi holly glad to be of help. I had my surgery in the august and my braces came off the following jan. tho i was given retainers to wear after that ffull time for about omg i cant remember total mind block. i would say about 8-10 months or so. and then i was allowed to wear it only on a night. which i still have to wear now 3 years post op. though it really isnt alot to ask and if it prevents any relapse then im happy to wear it. as you say tho everyone is different. it will all depend on the type of surgery you are having and also by what your ortho and surgeon feel is best for you. age can depend on it too. as i was only 17 when i had surgery there was a chance i could still be growing, tho they had monitored my growth since i was 12 and there was little sign. My surgeon wanted to wait until i had just about stopped again to prevent any relapse if my jaw continued to grow post op. i felt just like you about whether to go ahead with the surgery. i first found out i would be looking at surgery as the only way to correct my underbite when i was 12. i remember walking out the office really upset and crying to my mum that i was no way on this earth having it. it was more the thought of an operation that scared the living daylights out of me. that word OPERATION. it just speaks for itself. what i did was sit down and write what i felt the pros and the cons would be of this surgery. The pros out weighed the cons. alone this didnt make my decision for me though. i spent alot of time thinking about what could happen and researching them. this board proved alot of help when i discovered it a week before my surgery. and if i thought of a question or a worry i tended to write it down before i forgot then i could ask on here. again i felt reading these posts even the ones where people are having problems and sometimes - rarely - regrets. i think it helped me come back into reality a bit. you know that this is a serious operation and can be life changing and i feel you really have to evaluate how it will effect you personally and what you want to gain from it. as for the recovery. i admit the first week was pretty ruff. but i was in hospital for 5 days and im really glad of that as i had the nurses attention. I dont really feel that there was within that first week and point where i had wished i hadnt had it done. i was so happy and i remember laughing when i was brought back to the ward. only because i had a stomach tube and everytime i was sick (which wasnt stressful btw) it went thru a tube out of my nose into this bag. and all i could see was a seen from Have you heard of MR bean? Well a kid is sick into one of thos areoplane bags and mr bean doesnt know and blows it up to pop it. i just pictures everyone on the ward covered in my sick. gross i know but it helped me take my mind off things. i didnt suffer any pain, i did keep to the medication tho and made sure i took it on time to prevent any playing catch up and the possibility of pain as a result of not taking it. witin the first few weeks you do feel a bit groggy but time does goes relatively qucikly. each day you will see your swelling go down and this helps you feel better physically and mentally as you are getting excited about seeing your new face. Not so much of a regret but rather i wish time would fly quicker sort of thing, i did start to miss my food by about 4 weeks of pure liquids. i did get upset a few times at seeing everyone enjoy lovely meals and all i had to look forward to was gooe. the key is to vary your food. anything that will go into a blender try it! i took a fancy to liquid beans on toast, sunday dinners, and pot noodles. it really does taste better than it sounds. i would say by 3-4 weeks i was feeling more myself except for the food. other than that there was no pain or regrets. you have to be careful you dont over do it tho. i found if i did something that required alot of energy i would get tired sooner. and end up needing pain killers as a precaution. recovery really does differ from person to person. bing young has its advantages tho. if you want to see some of my photos they are on this site under katerina and on site 2 (which shows recent photos 3 years post oP) under kat_uk - i think, or that could be katerina too. I hope this info helps you. Again if you have any questions feel free to ask. write them down when you think of them so you dont forget, it pays off. hehe. i kept doing the smae thing and would nagg myself to remember and get annoyed.
