Guest guest
Hi, I know exactly how you feel as my son who is 10 yrs old went through tis last winter.Patience is the key .steroids def will help with inflammation but it takes time.Got to check her iron level as well.doc will push all kinds of milk and dietary supplements which mostly are legal but if you truly want her to gain weight her inflammation needs to subside and then gradually start taking off all illegals from the diet.It really works. My son did gain weight but I am concerns about his height.Steroids have stopped him from growing tall.He is the shortest in the class but hopefully that should be resolved as well............ I hope she will feel better soon. Take care, Shruti. My 11 year old daughter was just diagnosed with UC. The diagnosis should not have been surprising since she has had stomach problems since she was about 13 months old. Doctors always thought she had celiac due to her stature until she was diagnosed with acid reflux and esophagitis. So we were told to push grains (especially whole grains) and she was not lactose intolerant (as I thought) as it was the fat in the milk products are the cause of her problems. BTW the grains and lacotse did not work out so well as she just spent 5 days in the hospital and was diagnosed with UC. After her new diagnosis, I was lucky enough to know someone with experience with the SCD and she helped me started it for her Monday. She is also on a smorgasbord of pharmaceuticals that I really hope to get her off ASAP. She is still losing weight even while on 40 mg of prednisone and still has a massive stomach ache. So my question us when will she start to feel better? Anyone else have experience with children? Any advice would be appreciated.
Guest guest
So my question us when will she start to feel better? Anyone else have experience with children?I guess you could say I'm a child, relatively =) When you say it's the fat in the milk that's the problem; is that what the doctors guessed, or what you guessed based on symptoms, or what an allergy test showed, or something else? Usually the fat is the most well tolerated, and lactose the least (though lactose isn't SCD legal, so that isn't too much of an issue on here =) ) I definitely understand wanting to get off the meds, especially the prednisone; ugh. But, sometimes they turn out to be necessary to get over a big hump, as I've discovered. Anyways, everyone's different, but I would guess that if your daughter was eating tons of grains and lactose before, she should probably start feeling much better pretty soon after starting the SCD. Most people notice initial improvement, which might go away after a while, and then get smaller improvements over a long period of time. It does take time, but I'm glad you found the SCD so soon after diagnosis! Welcome to the group, and let us know if you have any more questions =) Cheers!Alyssa 16 yo UC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)Azathioprine 75 mg 1x per dayPrednisone 22.5 mg 1x per day
Guest guest
Hey, welcome to the group and I'm really glad you found SCD!!For people dealing with children on the diet, there is the pecanbread list which is largely for parents with children on the diet, although it's mostly for children with more neurological symptoms than digestive I guess. Anyways, in terms of applying the diet to a child, I bet they might be a great source of information and support. I would check it out http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/pecanbread/Let us know how it's going! :)Best! My 11 year old daughter was just diagnosed with UC.
