Guest guest
I'm just 6 mos. late in reading this post, but thought I could add something anyway. I have mod-severe hearing loss in both ears due to NS. It's been 11 years now; wow. Even though it's sensorineural (nerve damage) loss, hearing aids do help me, providing I don't lose them. I've only had one for the past 3 years, because I lost the left one. That's the 2nd one I've lost. The first pair I bought in 2000 when I was working. Had to pay cash & they were $1600 each. The replacements I've bought have been used, usually $400-600 with a one-year warranty. The hearing aids aren't ideal--they amplify EVERYTHING, including screaming kids at Walmart, so sometimes I have to turn them off. They don't help the sound of music--since my hearing loss music sounds like it's coming through a broken speaker. The more sounds the worse it is. A soloist with a guitar isn't too bad, but a band or quartet is really bad. My favorite music is Southern Gospel, so I mostly listen to albums I already knew & imagine what it's supposed to sound like! Matt, for the phone you might try a little square amplifier I got at Radio Shack when I was still working. It just straps on the receiver. You have to put it on every time, but it was a lifesaver for me. Back then they were just $10 or so. I kept one in the clinic & one in labor & delivery (I'm a retired nurse-midwife). Had my name on them & just whipped one out when I needed to use the phone. My son also has severe hearing loss (different mechanism; his is damage from chronic ear infections) & he used one of these at his work. A couple of years ago he got brand new, good quality hearing aids through the state voc-rehab. The last cell phone I got was supposed to work with hearing aids, but I can't hear worth a darn with the hearing aid, so I use the ear without a hearing aid. My biggest problem with my hearing aid is that I get so hot & sweaty, I have to take it out all the time. Moisture will mess them up. Well, this info is late & long, but maybe it will help somebody!
