Guest guest
I am wanting to start SCD and am still trying to learn all I can. I am under control right now, with meds. No diarrhea for over a month. Do I still need to do the intro phase of the diet?? Also, do I have to do the yogurt? I can't tolerate dairy very well.... should I still try it. I really want to give this diet all I've got... praying it can get me off the 20 pills a day, that I'm currently taking! Any help is greatly appreciated!! Guest guest
Yes you need to do the intro diet. Mostly because you need to slowly introduce foods to see what you react to and to heal your guts properly. If you aren't having symptoms you'll be able to intro foods a litle faster than some of us. Add one new food every 3 days. www.pecanbread.com has a list of stages that work pretty well but isn't for everyone. You don't have to eat the yogurt. You can get acidophilus pills from www.LucysKitchen.com. However, since the SCD yogurt is cooked for 24 hours virtually all of the lactos is removed versus store bought yogurt that is only fermented for about 4 hours. Many find goat yogurt easier to tolerate. Then there is almond milk and coconut milk yogurt made with homemade almond or coconut milk. Guest guest
I would definately do the intro diet for at least two days, and go slow introducing new foods from there. When we start this diet, we are switching away from having all the BAD bacteria in our gut digesting our food for us. It's like the gut system has to learn how to properly digest food again, and it needs to be healed at the same time, so I did my best to follow the stages on pecanbread.com. I started to feel better pretty quickly, and moved through some new foods pretty fast, but for some it takes much longer. (I have not been diagnosed with Crohn's though, I just suffered a lot of IBS, joint aches, painful bloating, and low energy before I found SCD.) And there are some foods I learned I could not longer tolerate like tomatoes, peanut butter, and coconut flour, which I hope to add back into my diet at some point in the future. You will know once you've been on the diet for a few weeks/months what you can tolerate as you mointor your own progress. I was ultra intolerant of wheat & dairy for a few years before starting this diet, and at first I dreaded having to make the yogurt, but I now LOVE the yogurt. I highly recommend at least trying it. It goes so great in morning smoothies! And after years of staying away from cheese, I can now totally tolerate cheddar without any problems! Good Luck!
