Guest guest
I was under the impression that B12 ranges didn't go that high...and that a low number was a bad number..am I reading your post wrong? ..... Joan... Re: B-12, Pernicious Anemia > I haven't posted or read any posting in awhile, but the B12 issue raised some of my own questions. I have been receiving B-12 shots monthly since the late 80's. My anemia wasn't found until 1988, 7 years after I had WLS. My PCP wasn't routinely checking my B-12, until I insisted. It was literally off the scale, were his words. 2400 was the top number, and mine exceeded that. He tells me you can't OD on B12. I've heard all my life that if the " B " vitamins are out of sinc, then your body doesn't function properly. Has anyone else heard this? He reduced the dose to 1/2, and instead of monthly I get them every 3 weeks with my hormone shot. I go in for my annual physical the 23rd of this month. I'm going to insist again that he checks it, along with my hormone levels. I'm really tired all the time. I've tried taken my iron again, but that hasn't seemed to help. Any suggestions about what I should ask him to check are welcomed. My PCP isn't a very assertive one, and he pretty much let's me call the shots, it seems to me. Does any one know of a good PCP in Oklahoma City that deals with WLS patients? Thanx for listening! > > Gail > >
Guest guest
B12 can go very high indeed... Just out of curiosity (the ND's, not mine) :-) we checked my B-12 level ten minutes after a 1 ml injection... It was 2800. This from a " resting " B-12 level a week before in the mid 300s. A low number is a bad number, that's correct. Anything under 600 is cause for concern, according to a number of doctors in the WLS community here. Guest guest
My PCP was reluctant to give the B12. I explained the mechanics to him, but had to test every time I got a shot. Oh boy, two needle sticks for the price of one. We were testing at a month, then at 3 weeks, then at 2 weeks. Worked out that it took 2 weeks to give me a decent number by the 14th day. The only reason I do monthly was because it was suggested by hematologist (for high ferritin) and rheumy for Raynaud's. Whatever. My levels have not gone a whole lot higher on weekly, which I find interesting. Thanks, Vitalady, Inc. Guest guest
The need for two B-12 shots a month is consistent with the research done by Dr. Baker in Minnesota. He tracked B-12 levels in his patients taking it oral and by shots. He found that those who took monthly shots had very low B-12 levels by the end of the month. Those who took it orally generally maintained a constant level. He recommends oral supplementation.
