Hello,

I had a surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE) of my

upper jaw, back in July 1998. Unfortunately, I never recovered from

the surgery. To this day, I am still in excruciating pain. I don't

mean to scare anyone. Believe me, my situation is very rare. I

have been to MANY doctors since, and none of them have been able to

help me. I had (have) an underbite and overcrowding, and I also had

(have) chronic headaches. I thought fixing the teeth and the bite

would improve the headaches. Instead the headaches got worse, and

ever since the surgery my top lip, teeth, gums, and cheeks have been

numb and in horrible pain...go figure. The oral surgeon who

performed my surgery does not know what to do to help me. If any of

you have had a similar experience, or know someone who has, can you

PLEASE send me the name of a doctor or someone that you think might

be able to help me? I would really appreciate it. I have been

searching for help for 7 years.

Thanks for your help,

Rasheda

Dear Rasheda,

Your story is tragic, but thankyou so much for sharing it with us. I am

contemplating having surgery for the second time and your story gives me a

reality check as to the risks involved. I don't mean to be negative, but I

ve had numerous surgeries and the worst experiences I have faced have been a

result of underestimating what I was getting myself into. It all sounds so

easy when the surgeon explains that you'll be home in no time and back to

work in a couple of weeks with a new smile.

I can't imagine how horrified people will be in the future when they hear

about the terrible things our generation underwent to reach physical

perfection at the hands of surgeons. At the same time, I have no admiration

for " Mother Nature " who stuffed up my mouth in the first place.

I wish so much there was an easier way! I wish for you that you didn't have

to undergo such suffering.

If anyone hears of any research going on in alternative jaw treatments...I

want to be the first to hear about it!!!!! Meanwhile, we'll all keep our

ears pinned to the ground about any possible relief for you Rasheda . Have

you tried acupuncture? I've heard that it can be very effective for pain

relief.

I don't believe anything is impossible. Many years ago, my best friend gave

birth to a daughter with diabetes and I used to help take care of her. One

day as I was giving her the usual injection and she was crying because of

the pain, I told her that one day she would not need to have needles. Her

mother, who was a nurse, told me not to say such silly things....that it was

impossible for a diabetic to ever live without injections.

Well last year her daughter turned 16 years old and no longer has to have

needles. A new pump was developed that automatically feeds her body the

amount of insulin she needs through a permanent tube. It is pain free and

very effective. So there you go.

Hang in there Rasheda, maybe there is an answer for you just around the bend

My best wishes and deepest sympathy for your situation,

.

I was suffering from constant headaches. 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

Being allergic to Aspirin and pain killers, this greatly reduced my options

for medication (Tylenol is about the only thing I can have).

Before the surgery, and after the surgery, the headaches have come and

gone and returned. I was told that there was a 50% of chances those

would go after the surgery. Or that they would either return as frequently

as before, or be worst. I got something between frequently and worst.

The only two kind of health specialists that helped me

so far are chiropractors and osteopath. A chiro, a good one, will not only

threat the column, but also all joints and all aspects of your posture. If

you choose this way, have someone you know refer his or hers. Avoid the

ones that offers you 78 appointments in advance. Maybe two visits

scheduled in advance, but nothing more. Each treatment should be tailored

to individual needs. The chiro discovered two misaligned vertebras (close to

the brain) because of the way my who mouth was, I had difficulties breathing,

so I developped a wrong posture. 35 years later, I'm paying the price.

The osteopath or physio therapist offers a more peaceful and gentle treatment.

Mine helped immensely to reduce heart burns and reflux. She offered some help

with

the headaches, but it was temporary. The chiro is what works best for me

when headaches are coming back over and over again. Also, if your headaches

are related to TMJ pain or malfunction, an osteopath will offer relief (if not

total healing). Find one that specializes in jaw problems. Mine was refered to

me by my surgeon.

No one option will offer overnight relief or healing. I've developped TMJ

dysfunction (result from the surgery) and I've been visiting an osteopath since

last November, every two weeks. The situation has improved, pain is gone in

that

area, but there's not much strenght.
