Hello all,

Will be having my pre-op visit on June 2nd. Along with x-rays and

models, I will be getting wires put on along with arch wires which I

think go into the gums.

They will be giving me sometype of gas to help with the pain while

they put them on.

Does anyone have or had arch wires?

Are they the same as skelital wires?

Did they hurt when they were put on?

Surgery is on June 10th.

WEll, it's all a bit confusing.

Do you have braces on now... Wires and brackets?

Arch wires usually mean the wires that go through the slots in your

brackets, if you have brackets. And yes, there are " surgical wires "

which are generally very stiff, strong, heavy arch wires.

But if you don't have braces, you may be getting arch bars, which I

would suppose are wired onto the teeth, and perhaps into the bone (I

don't know. I had reguar wires-and-brackets braces.

As far as I know, the skeletal wires, which are actually laced

between the bones, go in during the surgery, and are different from

any of the above.

I have the impression that arch bars are no fun, but it's been more

the removal than the installation that's troublesome. If your doc is

ready to give you gas if you need it, that sounds like a good signe

to me that he/she's well prepared and concerned to take care of you.
