Lumps & Bumps

My daughter is 5 months old & has been in her band for 2 1/2 weeks. Last night

when we removed it for cleaning we noticed her head has a few weird bumps/lumps.

Almost like a small goose egg. I remember reading that when babies get their

bands off the head can be lumpy but is it normal to have these lumps during

treatment?

My husband is freaking out, saying this looks way worse then she looked before

we banded in the first place.

Thanks!

We were told by the cranio-facial plastic surgeon, before we were working with

an orthotist, that the bumps (if they are the right bumps) are the skull pushing

out. If it is around the area with the flat spot, starting at the bottom of the

head, that might be what you are seeing. My daughter has a few different bumps

on the back of her head where her flat spot is (i.e. it doesn't necessarily pop

out smoothly.) She has been in her band for 6 weeks this week.

Also - about a week or two after we got her band, she had a little bump at the

base of her neck on the other side of her head - kind of felt like what a

swollen lymph node would feel like. It went away shortly afterward. The

orthotist said that it was normal and other people he's worked with have had it.

His explanation was that you might not have noticed it if she didn't have a

helmet and you were feeling around! But if that type of bump didn't go away

relatively quickly, I would maybe get it checked out.

Thank you everyone!

We had our appointment at CT yesterday & got some answers.

First, one of the bumps is right below the velcro, in the gap of the band & that

is fluid and totally normal according to CT.

The second bump is on the other side, above her ear. They said that it was

there originally (showed me on her cast..but I wasn't sure I agreed) and just

getting larger with the rounding. It may or may not go down. ???

Thanks for the advice!

That first lump is quite common. Did they say what they think the second lump is? Is it just the way that the bone is shaped there?
