Guest guest
This summer I had 2 episodes of reactive hypoglycemia. I thought they were gone for good. This week I have felt the same symptoms every single day, same time (between 8 and 8:30 a.m., weird, huh?) Monday and Tuesday it went away. Yesterday I walked into the nurse's office to ask her to ck my blood pressure because I thought it was low (I'm an elementary school secretary). I had just sat down when BAM, I lost all my body strength, I was like one big wet noodle!! I spoke like a drunk woman. If I had been standing I surely would have fallen flat on my face. Had about 2 oz Sunny Delight (that's all we had on hand), felt better after about 30 mins. Today, again, same thing. Went to my PCP, says it's classic example of reactive hypoglycemia. He did one blood test because it had been 2 hrs since I had breakfast and my blood sugar was 95 (I think that's what he told me). He said it was in the normal range for 2 hours after eating. He is going to send me to a nutritionist because I told him I sure don't want to feel like this every single day! I had lunch at 1:30 (2 cups salad, 1 tbsp salad toppings, thousand island dressing, 1 slice deli ham, 4 potato chips), and had a slightly shaky- legs feeling at about 3. Am I doomed to feeling like this every single day? For what it's worth, I've been extra-careful with my eating habits since Monday morning. Decided to cut all visible carbs (breads, cookies, sugars), have had mostly good things (that I can think of), boiled egg whites, bacon, cheese, small salads, pork rinds, s.f. popsicles, s.f. jello. The only thing I have done different this week (besides cutting out all the crap) is that I am having 3 meals instead of eating almost every 2 hours! Could it be possible that the time span from supper till breakfast the next day (from 6 pm until 9 a.m.) is too long to go without food?? Another thing, I've had a small salad for lunch every day this week. I hardly eat salads since my surgery 29 months ago; to me salads is " diet " mentality, but decided to try it to help get this 23.5 lb rebound weight back off! So far 3.5 lbs are off since Monday morning. Could the salad have something to do with it? I'm desperate for some answers... Has anyone suffered on a continual basis with this? What have you done? Thanks! Estela in Texas
Guest guest
Estela, Keep a jar of peanut butter and a spoon handy. Every now and then, especially if you have not eaten for a while, eat a spoonful of PB. When you choose brands, check the label, as some add sugar (and salt) to the peanuts. --Steve
Guest guest
Estela, I'm sorry to hear you are going through this. I've had this happen several times, especially this summer. My fluids were extremely low, so was my iron. The thing that helped me was increasing my protein drinks, increasing fluids (no caffeine) and if I even started to feel one coming on, I immediately mixed a shake and downed it. Then I had some cheese or other protein item. Keep us posted, I hope you are feeling better soon! Hugs, Lori Help needed with hypoglycemia > This summer I had 2 episodes of reactive hypoglycemia. Guest guest
The thing I have noticed about reactive hypoglycemia is that eating 5 or 6 meals a day works better then 3 meals a day. It keeps the body energized. That maybe why it starts so early in the morning. I generally try to do some protein about 7 or 8 at night so that I don't get that feeling in the morning.
