Guest guest
You know, I was wondering... Has anyone ever requested a nerve block prior to adjustments? We were talking about pain management using nerve blocks in addition to other modalities today in my dentistry elective, and I can't help but think how much more pleasant this whole ordeal could be with some drugs! Just wondering.... but I'm definitely going to ask my OD next time I get my faced yanked on! :-) I'm absolutely one of the biggest babies he has had to deal with! Guest guest
uhmmm pardon my ignorance but what's a nerve block? it sounds scary:-0 > > I had my 3 week post op check up today. Guest guest
lol... sorry... I'm in that " mode " today! It's just local anesthesia that is injected directly into areas that would affect specific nerves. It's pretty much the novocaine shot the dentist gives you prior to drilling, done in a specific spot to block feeling to particular regions. I'd be ok with blocking feeling to my entire head, but I don't think my OD would go for that! Kate > > > I had my 3 week post op check up today. Guest guest
Kate I haven't asked for any during this whole process, but I have been told that any injection can induce swelling in the injection site. Maybe the docs are just trying not to add to the swelling we already have post op. Just a thought. > > I had my 3 week post op check up today. Guest guest
First: As my surgeon told me, more than once: " You like to talk a LOT. Don't. " I would think nerve blocks would be way into overkill for ortho adjustments... But then I didn't have any until I was two months post-op, and by then it wasn't bad -- except that I did get shingles on my face. Still, I don't want anybody sticking needles into/near my nerves unless it has to be. Too much danger that they won't come back. I trust my general dentist with the novocaine, but honestly prefer the gas (and not the least because I do not like the needles!). Besides, somehow I doubt that nerve blocks would stop the pain from pressure, but I dunno... I can usually feel pressure, even to a greater extent, with a nerve that's had novocaine blocking it.
