Guest guest
Kathleen, thank you so much for responding! It's such a relief to know that people at the day care can be so caring and accomodating about the braces. I guess what i need to do now if find a good day care center for him. Does your son now only wear the shoes while sleeping? Thanks Anju mom to abhay 5 months bcf --- leenernd wrote: > Anju- > Welcome to the group! Guest guest
Anju- Yup! His " magic shoes " go on right at bedtime and he gets them off first thing in the morning. Once I showed his teachers how easy it was to take the shoes off, they had no misgivings. They were so kind to david during his casting phase-very diligent about keeping his casts clean. He's had some other medical issues-currently he is in a cast that totally covers his right arm(hand surgery) and they make sure he doesn't get in the sand box and help him with his lunch in order to keep this cast clean. We didn't know about david's clubfeet until he was born-by that time we had picked the daycare already. They were so welcoming to us and to david and very supportive!! hth, kathleen mom to david bcf fab 12/7 > > > > > > Hi, > > > > > > I just joined the group today and i have a > > question. Guest guest
My son would get these alot (no CF) and my daughter has had a couple. I guess it could be from the brace, but alot of CF babies have funny toenails. I would guess that it is just one of those things. What I do is cut a V in the middle of the toenail that was when the nail grows, it grows away more from the sides. Funny looking kinda, but works Christee Mother of... *Josh (9)~Learning/Speech Delays **Aspen (6)~ Bilateral Metatarsus Adductus ***Dylan (4)~PTSD/Anxiety ****Lilee (10 months)~A-Typical ® *P/M Brace 10/24 by request of Dr. P *Special tongue pads f/ due to chubbyness of foot --------------------------------- Sneak preview the all-new Yahoo.com. Guest guest
Hi and welcome to you and Darby! Glad to hear Darby is in such good hands with Dr. Pirani. As for the toenail I think it is fairly common, not just with clubfoot kids, but any child who has " funky " toenails. Does Darby have toenails that sort of 'stick up'? The brace *could* be causing it if her toe is being squished in the toe box of the shoe. Are you using the Markell shoes or the Ponseti/s? If she is in the Markells then the toe squishing is more common. You may want to look at getting a wider or bigger shoe. It could also be her regular shoes if they are too tight in the toe box or getting too small. Otherwise, ingrown toenails are just something that happens, you want to try to cut the toenail straight across and not too too short, otherwise this gives the nail the opportunity to grow into the fleshy part of the side of the nailbed which can then get infected. Hope this helps, Mom to Jenna (4/7/01) & Sammy (9/25/04, RCF, Dobbs brace 12-14 hrs/day) > > Hello My name is I have a daughter named Darby with clubfoot! > I am with Dr.Pirani at Royal Columbian in New Westminster BC Canada. Guest guest
Hello , Welcome to the group ! My daughter Grace also sees Dr. Pirani, she'll be 2 at the end of July, how old is Darby? Which toe is infected? The big one? Is she comfy in the brace? You know one of the mommies from this group set up another group so we could all share pics of our kids feet & sweet faces...if you have a digital camera, you could take a pic of the toe and send it to the group for us to take a look. This site dosen't support attachments...heres the link http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/CFPics/ There is a short survey that needs to be filled out then cut and pasted back for approval. But I would say to use the antibiotic cream and see how it goes over the next couple of days. My ex had a pretty bad infection on his thumb from a deep cut and 'finally' went in to see a doc who perscribed him some antibiotic cream and it cleared it up in a matter of days. Anyway, glad to have you here! & Grace 22mos urcf FAB 12-14hrs > > Hello My name is I have a daughter named Darby with clubfoot! > I am with Dr.Pirani at Royal Columbian in New Westminster BC Canada. Guest guest
Hi ! It was nice to see you and your husband at Hip Hip Hooray and to meet Darby! She is waayyyy cute! I'm glad you joined the group. There are so many supportive people here that can answer virtually any question, big or small! I hope you can get some help with the infected toe....Hayden used to get nastiness on his toes all the time but it was when he was in casts and his big toes are so funky they'd cut the skin when it folded over. Probably the best thing is to clean it and put a little polysporin or something like that on it. Glad to see you here! darbysfeet wrote: Hello My name is I have a daughter named Darby with clubfoot! Guest guest
I have not thought of whether or not could hit herself in her head with the bar. Guest guest
Oh it's very possible! LOL! When they are of the age/size that their legs are only as long as their body. In fact I play with Garrison lifting his feet and touching his bar to his forehead. Makes him laugh. Everett cracked his bar against his forehead a few times on his own too, in the past, before his legs becaem longer and he had more muscle control. I'd pad the bar at this age to prevent head aches. As for giving the oral meds, put the dropper way back in the side of their cheek and squeeze it out real slow leaving the dropper in there cuz as they try to spit out the dropper they actually move their tongue and end up swallowing the medication. s. Guest guest
if you blow on baby's face/nose when the medicine is in their mouth it makes them swallow automatically. Try that in addition to what ee said. I hate giving babies medicine, the blowing worked with the first two but the last one, my CF baby would only get half in or less even when I blew. she hated it THAT much. grrrrr.... Guest guest
Hi , No I didn't get a chance to meet you at the Hip Hip Hooray....got there a little late....ended up over the Pitallo (see I don't even know how to spell it hahaha) bridge. Hope her toe is doin better, how is it looking? That advise to cut the toenails straight across is good. Are Darby's toes curved or a bit funny looking? Grace's big toes curl upwards, they are MUCH better now that her feet/toes are growing but we see lots of our cf babies with odd shaped tosies so that may be a contributor. Grace is due for a check up soon like real soon, gotta get on that! I'll post when I'm taking her in and see if you're due for an appt, it's been so long lol, is the casting clinic still on Tuesdays? Let us know how Darby's doing and oh yes, Grace had to take oral meds for the first 6 mo's of her life (she did come to really like them) they tasted a bit like cherry icecream (no wonder haha) but for the first week or so I did the syringe far back in the side of the mouth trick that ee mentioned, workes great! Guest guest
Hey - let's try and get appointments all on the same day. Dr. Pirani told us to come back July/August. I'd like to go in July because we are going to be away half of August. Guest guest
Hi my name is Lynn. I just finished reading " Breaking the Vicious Cycle " where I found out about this group. I've also checked out scd.org. There's is so much information and I hope that this will cure me. 5 months ago I was hospitalized with diverticulitis of the sigmoid colon. I was in the hospital for 5 days on iv antibiotics. I felt better for a few days but then pain in descending, and also ascending colon. Back and forth to the dr, had a colonoscopy 5 weeks later where they found severe diverticulosis in the sigmoid colon and bits of diverticula throughout the colon. But they can't identify why I have more pain in my ascending colon than my descending colon. I switched doctors abt 2 months ago. My new dr. did many stool tests which all came back negative, tested for celiac, came back negative. He put me on Xifaxin for 10 days. This helped and for about 1 week after I finished the medication I felt pretty good. Then pain came back, with constipation and diahrea. Dr. put me on a higher dose of Xifaxin and 4 days later pain was worse so he took me off. That was last week. Had a couple of good days and now feeling pain again. My best times are when I go days without having a bowel movement (I know that's not healthy). My bad days are when I have 1 or 2 or 3 bowel movements. I feel like I have little people inside my colon with a scouring pad just scubbing away. I heard about SCD and thought it couldn't hurt to try. I'm concerned that I'm not a good cook and also that I hate to cook and the recipes overwhelm me. Also, I've lost 40 pounds in 5 months from lack of eating. I have another doctor's appt tomorrow. Not sure what the next step is but I am also reading a book my Dr. Mark Pimintel called the " New IBS Solution " and he mentioned a breath test for SIBO. I wanted to introduce myself and was wondering if anyone could offer any advice for beginners. Thanks. Lynn

You are irritating internal tissue which is raw or just beginning to heal and being rubbed raw again. OTOH, having C isn't helping either, as you are just providing a non movable feast, so to speak, for your pathogenic bacteria to munch on and help them breed. > I heard about SCD and thought it couldn't hurt to try. I'm concerned that I'm not a good cook and also that I hate to cook and the recipes overwhelm me. As I see it, the choice is: would you rather be ill and not cook or get much healthier as you learn to cook. IOW, what's more irritating, having bad health or cooking? OTOH, you get sicker. Or, OTOH, you acquire a useful lifetime skill. Lots of our members have learned to cook from beginning to implement this diet. And the beginning recipes are all very simple. Not overwhelming at all. Thanks. The best thing you can do right now is put up a big, big pot of chicken or meat bone soup. Immediately. And let it begin to cook - take the meat off the bones when cooked and return the meat to the stock until they have cooked for up to 24 hours - the longer, the richer the stock is in gelatin which is an amazing substance for reducing inflammation in the intestines and inducing healing. Add 1 TB vinegar to help leach the gelatin from the bones. Next, puree all your veggies. You basically don't want any fiber at all in your guts right now, since the fiber is more likely to irritate your gut walls. So all food soft like baby food - only simple veggies, well cooked and pureed and also avocados mashed. Farmer's cheese if you tolerate dairy. Be extra slow at adding in new things to discover what you tolerate and what you don't because your intestines are so inflamed at certain points. Good luck beginning, Mara

Guest guest
Hi Lynn: You definitely came to the right place. There are a lot of helpful and friendly people here. If you go to the group files (logging into the group from Yahoo), there is a Getting Started file that will help. Don't worry about not being a good cook. Even the people that think they are the worst often find that they become decent cooks on SCD. If you have any questions about what a preparation nmethod means, ask the group. For me, a stock pot and immersion blender ($15 from Wal Mart) were essential. It was so daunting trying to blend everything in my blender and messy too. As I've gone through the diet, I've acquired a lot more stuff that's made my life so much easier. I already had a mini food processor which I use all the time. I acquired a large food processor about 1.5 years into the diet which helps a lot. I work full time and have my daughter half the time. My job the first 1.5 years on the diet required me to be out of the office at client's offices most days. Planning ahead and having all your food ready and go-to items in the fridge for when you're really hungry is helpful. I kept boiled eggs in the fridge and individually frozen cooked chicken patties in the freezer for when I needed to grab something quick. Don't let yourself run out of food, that's when it's most likely that you'll cheat. My biggest piece of advice is take it slow. Start out with the chicken soup and homemade gelatin and after 3 - 5 days slowly add in other foods that are well cooked and pureed. Give about 3 days between each food. www.pecanbread.com is geared toward autistic children following SCD but they have a great guideline for introducing foods in stages that may help. But I can tell you that the lady who was my mentor on the diet was told her gut looked like bloody lace. 14 months later, her doctor said he would not have believed she was the same patient if he had not diagnosed her himself. SCD cooking doesn't require elaborate cooking. My husband, who can burn water, if given a chance, can manage roasts and steamed vegetables. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle

She was absolutely fanatical about SCD as it is in the book. Absolutely NOTHING she (or her mom) did not make herself. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
Guest guest
I was just reading about ketosis and that's a sign of it. http://diet.lovetoknow.com/wiki/Ketosis_Signs Sorry, I haven't been following so this thread so it might have been mentioned already. Misty Kimble CD - no meds SCD - Jan 2008 > > Hi everyone, >  > I'm really finding everyone posts very educational. I just joined this group and ordered the book " Breaking the Vicious Cycle " along with a couple of cookbooks. I was diagnosed with UC a couple of months ago. I'm currently on prednisone but from my own " gut " feelings and after everything I've been reading in the last week, I think I'm seeing the big picture here. Every time I start to lower it ever so slightly, my symptoms come back and get worse every day. I haven't raised it back up yet because I'm trying get the recommended supplements into my system.  However, as of the moment, no results. Since I've read the premise on what the SCD is all about and why it's so necessary, I know this is a must do. My body is very intolerant of pharmaceuticals, so mostly I do natural medicine. I tolerate the prednisone at the 20 mg that I'm taking but when they had me on 25 mg I had to taper it down to about 22 mg as 25 had me jumping out of my skin > and causing other intolerable reactions. But at 20 mg, I started bleeding and other symptoms again, each day a little worse. In my mind to complicate things I have nasty hypoglycemia. So besides constant snacks of protein, I have found that complex carbs are necessary..and this protocol has keep me alive as far as the hypoglycemia. I don't know at this very moment how I am going to be able to do this diet without these carbs, but perhaps after I read the books  I'll have more insight. If anyone has anything to share, please do, as I find this a wrinkle that concerns me.. I'm 53, female and married with a few four legged kids. I was feeling positive about healing until I saw how the bleeding and so on came right back with a vengeance when I lowered the prednisone. I thought the supplements would kick in as I was trying to taper off. Now that I've been " enlightened " I'd appreciate feedback of any sort including the hypoglycemia issue. I > should be getting the books in the mail in a week or two the latest. I'm so pleased for all the info I've been able to access in the files and on the computer, as well as finding these lists. >  >  Healing to all, Duckie >
Guest guest
Hi and Welcome... Congratulations on finding an alternative to the meds so soon.. It is a big plus as for healing.. And it will give you a leg up on most of the foods.. at least for me it did.. I was diagnosed in September of last year. .My sister had UC for many years so I knew the signs and caught it early..Found and started SCD in July of this year and plan on being off of all meds soon.. Did you buy the book. Breaking the Vicious Cycle? If not ..go get it... Everything will make more sence after you read it.. As for Yogart "equiment" Finding a good starter is the hardest.. All you need after that is a temp probe..I change the light bulb in my electric oven and prop the door open with a pen. It kept it with in range..(have to play with it, if you drop the A.C cooler at night..) Now i do it with a heat lamp in an ice chest so it does not tie up my oven for 24 hours. I would think having an office job would help.. READLY available bathroom!! I am an AC tech by trade.. Thankfully my boss makes sure there is a bathroom at every construction site. And the guys have been looking for a small micro wave that I can put in my truck with a adapter for my electricity. So i do not have to go back to the office at lunch to heat my food..My D is very much under control at this time and I only go once in the evening THANK GOD.. Check out the pecanbread web site for the stages of food.. It is a good guide.. but just that.. a guide.. we all tolorate different food at different rates... Best of luck and happy healing...
