Guest guest
Judy, I'd BET you have a stoma problem, but the only way to be sure is to have a scope (endoscopy) so they can look and make that determination in a scientific way. If your stoma's too big, how on earth can it be YOUR fault? Please look into this ASAP. Perhaps your PCP can refer you, or post here where you are and maybe people can help you identify WLS-experienced gastroenterologists in your area. Z Open RNY 09/17/01 http://www.ziobro.us Too large stoma I am not sure if anyone can answer this for me but here goes. I am 2years out from my by pass surgery and very upset. When I had my leak test the day after my surgery, I had to drink a second glass of the yuky stuff while lying down beccause the tech told me I had the largest stoma he had seen. The liquid was passing straight through the pouch. It would not stay in the there long enough to see if the pouch was leaking or not. At nine months, I quit losing. Slowly I started to regain the weight cause I was always hungry. Part of it is my fault because the old emotional eating habits came back with a vengence. The more upset I got over not being " sucessful " , the more I wanted to eat. I finally have begin to lose again by eating a high protein no carb diet. I'm so confused and down. My wls buddies all lost all of their excess weight and I feel like a whale again. Is it all my fault? Or is there a physical problem with the stoma? To the doctors, I am " none compliant " . I am very sad. Part of me feels like I was let down by the surgeon and the other part guilty guilty. Guest guest
Judy, I am going through a similar ordeal. It is not you it is the mechanical problem with your stoma. Have you considered finding another sugeon to see about getting it fixed? Couldn't be anything THEY did wrong, ya know. Stomas can stretch on their own for no reason at all. They can also be not made small enuf to begin with by the surgeon. Please do not blame yourself. It is not your fault at all, even if you were non-compliant. We have this surgery to help us BE compliant. If the part of it that's supposed to keep you from feeling hungry doesn't work, it's pretty darned hard to be compliant all the time. I wouldn't let your age interfere with getting a " fix " if in fact a fix is possible. Sometimes it's not. I'm 61 and still mulling over my options. Guest guest
The time it takes for water to pass through the gastric pouch is not a very reliable indicator of stoma size. Take a baggie and cut one corner to make a hole about the size of an M & M too a dime. The pour 6 oz of water in the baggie and see how fast it goes through it. It will be gone in under 3 seconds. I do not thing you can get a good feeling for the size of the stoma by using water.
