Guest guest
, I was in a similar boat as you. My two main reasons for having two orthognathic surgeries and orthodontics were that I had terrible migraines (diagnosed TMJ) and couldn't eat/bite/chew properly (only my four teeth furthest back actually touched each other). I was excited with the side affect of a more " aesthetically pleasing " appearance but tried not to bring that into the equation too much during my thought process. I'm 6 days post-op now and am still not 100% sure that I made the right decision. I have some good hours and some bad hours. Sometimes I see the decrease in swelling and I can look forward to the coming months and the pleasure of a headache free life and that silly old ham sandwich. Sometimes when I can't communicate with my 13 year old son and have trouble being patient enough to write things down I get totally distraught and think I made a huge mistake. Thankfully, I have people both in my life and on this board that will let me vent and give me advice and just support me - overall. This type of surgery is major - as far as I'm concerned - and a very individual thing. While I can't fathom having " cosmetic surgery " I know for others it has made their life a happier one. While some can't imagine having an expander in the roof or their mouth that they have to turn every day to widen their palate I know I did it and came through a stronger and more satisfied person. Anyway, I'm rambling - too much time on my hands. My point in responding to your post was to say my reasons for contemplation were similar ... but justifying the process ... that's for each of us to decide for ourselves. I wish you the very best of luck! And remember fear doesn't make you a coward - just human.
