Guest guest
Hey everyone, I'm a 24 year old guy at the final stages of pre-op. I've had braces for almost a year (for the third time) and have a consulatation with my surgeon in a few weeks. I have a recessive lower jaw, so thats what will be adjusted. I have done alot of research on the recovery aspect, but I wanted to hear from some of you for first hand accounts on this type of procedure. I anticipate taking a week off from work and then going back. My main concern is that I may have trouble breathing through my nose since I am a mouth breather, I realize that this is mainly contributed to my jaw. How many days will I probably have to stay in the hospital? What are the main areas of numbness that I should expect.
Guest guest
I'm also a mouth breather - and had those same concerns as I'm currently wired shut for 8 weeks. So far, so good. The body seems to adjust and my nose has just taken over. I took off two weeks from work and am going back tomorrow. I was in the hospital from Thursday morning (surgery @ 10:30) until about Noon on Saturday. I had upper and lower jaw surgery. I have numbness in my cheeks, my nose, the area between my nose and upper lip and my upper lip. I hope that information helps, even a little! Good luck as you move forward towards your surgery! Guest guest
I had work on lower jaw only. No problems whatever with breathing. I was splinted, but not wired, nor banded. I think the folks who have lots of congestion are those work have work on upper jaw... But ask your surgeon, for sure. Some lower jaw folks have a lot of numbness. I had none at all -- I was very fortunate. I was VERY weary. I had surgery when I was in my mid-50s, which may explain why. I took four weeks off work. You may not have that experience. Good luck! Guest guest
Hey there, I am 22 and am a month post op with upper and lower. I too was a huge mouthbreather (I thought i would sufficate if i had to breath thru my nose because I was ALWAYS slightly congested. I was scared before the surgery but when I woke up (not a word of a lie) i coudl breath through my nose 100 percent better than befor eth esurgery and it has been that way since. I was off work anyway until amonth later when my contract started, but I went to my boss a week and a half post op and asked to go back, unfortunitly i couldnt talk to well adn there wasnt really any work i coudl do other than stuff envelopes or somthing so I decidd to wait a few more weeks tilt he wires came off to go back to work, but im fine, now... see my post earlier today... its a breeze... dont let all the bad experiences on ehre fool you, just like in the buisness world, you hear 90 percent of the bad stories and 10 percent of the good ones.... Guest guest
I didn't have any trouble, even though I had upper and lower done. There was alot of gunk in my nose which I gently cleaned out with a damp q-tip (after my doc ok'd it) but that was all. BTW, you may not have to be wired shut. Different docs handle this differently. I had rubber bands linking top to bottom but could open my mouth just a bit. Not enough to brush my teeth, so I still had atomic dragon breath, but enough that I didn't feel very constricted.
