On September 18, 2004, the ASBS Foundation will hold the second

annual nationwide Walk From Obesity - a fundraising event designed to

reduce disability, death and discrimination of people who are obese

by educating the public and healthcare professionals about effective

treatments.

This nationwide non-competitive walking event will bring together

participants of all ages from throughout their communities. s

raise money by asking friends, family and co-workers to sponsor them.

In addition to walker income, funds are raised through sponsorship,

matching gifts, corporate contributions and other fund-raising

activities.

The funds raised through this event will support the ASBS

Foundation's educational mission by:

Increasing research funding specifically for severe obesity

Improving obesity awareness and reducing its associated

discrimination

Increasing public education about this devastating disease

Increasing professional education concerning effective treatments of

the disease

The Walk From Obesity will raise funds in cities across the United

States. The organizational structure of this event will begin with

individual surgeons and their patient support groups working with the

Foundation's regional walk coordinators to tailor each walk to their

specific community. Groups interested in organizing a walk will

choose a volunteer walk event leader. It will be his or her

responsibility to recruit a pyramid of other volunteers. Each event

leader will receive a detailed information packet explaining how to

organize a successful Foundation Walk.

Already Committed — A few of the many cities that will have walks:

Nashville, TN

Tulsa, OK

San Francisco, CA

San Diego, CA

Phoenix, AZ

Denver, CO

Miami, FL

Boston, MA

Richmond, VA

Tacoma, WA

with more to come! (see all cities)

The Walk From Obesity is fun and flexible. Each community walk can

adapt the program material to their own design, abilities and needs.

This walk is for everyone; participants can be young or old, active

or non-active, thin or obese.
