New - Glue Smell in Band

Hi. I'm new here. My 5.5 month old son has been in his Starband since

Wednesday. We took him in for an adjustment today because his Starband was

shifting. Our orthotist put a " ledge " in the inside back of it. It looks like

she did this by adding some foam to the inside of the band. However, the whole

rest of the day his band smells like glue or white out and I'm concerned about

the fumes. Has anyone else experienced this? He's also screaming tonight and

doesn't want to sleep (which is not at all like him). Should l I keep it on his

head?

Thanks.

Hi Leah, My son had foam added to his STARband at one point and I remember the

fumes being horrible. My ortho said they were not toxic, but I did not trust

him. Something that terrible smelling can't be healthy. I took the helmet off

for an extra 2 hours and put it against a fan. The smell went away within a

day.

Not sure if the screaming at night is related to the fumes. Maybe the ledge

added is uncomfortable? Are there any red spots? I would contact your ortho if

it continues.

Yes, and my orthotist always makes mention of the smell when

returning the helmet to my daughter. As if I might choose not to

return it to her head because of that, and walk out without assessing

the fit? Maybe we're supposed to bring our little bottles of alcohol

with us?

I don't know what the chemical is. Smells line toluene to me, though

(model airplane glue).

Very interesting. I wonder what they are using. My STARband ortho did add a piece of padding to our STARband, but I don't remember any smell with it.

We've also had padding affixed with something like rubber cement,

which I think was a peel-and-stick sort of application. That pad was

white, whereas this stuff with the hard glue is orange. The

advantage seems to be that you can re-shape the orange stuff.
