Guest guest
Thank you very much ,Yes, you are right, I actually noticed the asymmetry while I was looking at (my daughter) in the mirror. Also, what you said about preference of one side, she definitely likes the right side and twists her body and head to the side often. I know that the problem is correctable but I am so concerned-she is so little and the thought of something being wrong with her is very scary. I am attaching a photo to elicit comments from youThank you very much for your help Karolina From: christineashok <christineashok@...>Plagiocephaly Sent: Sat, January 23, 2010 9:54:37 PMSubject: Re: New to the group-need help Hi Karolina, Facial asymmetry is very common when the head is asymmetric (plagiocephaly) . It is most likely more obvious if you look at her face in the mirror. Banding should help correct the plagio and some of the asymmetry. Also if she has torticollis that can contribute to the asymmetry (both plagio and facial). Tort is a condition where the neck muscles are tighter on one side so the baby has a strong preference to look in one direction and may not have full range of motion with the head. You can often notice the head tipped to one side in photos. The treatment for tort is physical therapy, which is mostly doing stretches at home 5 times a day (the PT will show you how). Many peds are not that familiar with plagio and tort, so you may have to push a bit for a referral to a specialist. Many peds will tell you "it will round out on its own", but if you're seeing the asymmetry you really need to evaluate it seriously now while she's so young. It is much easier to correct in young babies since they grow quickly. Let us know what happens at your ped's. -christine sydney, 4 yrs, starband grad > > hello there, > > Hopefully you can help me. Guest guest
,Thank you very much for your note of encouragement. It is difficult to face the fact that there might be something wrong with your child but I am determined to fix the problem. I took to a doctor yesterday and just as I suspected, he said that every child is different and that no one is born symmetric. I have booked appointments with three different doctors to get further opinions. I will definitely let the group know what I find out. Thank you for your help so far Karolina From: thardter36 <thardter36@...>Plagiocephaly Sent: Mon, January 25, 2010 9:48:05 PMSubject: Re: New to the group-need help Karolina, My daughter is a 4 year graduate of the doc band. She had erbs palsy and torticollis at birth. I noticed it also at about 4 months. One eye was bigger in pictures and her cheek was larger on one side. She was in a doc band for 8 months and now you would never know it! I am so happy I pursued the challenge of trying to convince insurance and doctors that something could be done. Good luck and just so you know IT IS ALL WORTH IT!!!!- (mom to na age 5 doc band grad!) > > > > hello there, > > > > Hopefully you can help me. Guest guest
Hi Tatiana,No, my doctor did not confirm the plagio or tort. He said that she stretches the one side because she wants to flip over. I don't have much confidence in what he says, that is why I am going to three other doctors over the next couple of weeks. I have an appt tomorrow to another doctor and will push for the diagnosis and a referral to PT. Thank you for reviewing 's pictureKarolina From: tatianakmeyer <tatianakmeyer@...>Plagiocephaly Sent: Tue, January 26, 2010 3:15:23 PMSubject: Re: New to the group-need help Karolina, Did your doc confirm that your daughter has plagio? Did he check if she has tort? Did he refer you to PT? You mentioned that she does prefer one side to the other. That should raise a red flag for your doc. It is very important to start stretching the tight muscle as soon as possible to prevent worsening of the asymmetry. My son had tort, but I couldn't even tell because he didn't have the head tilt. We had to wait 3 weeks to get an appointment with a PT. I am sure his neck tightness and plagio got worse during those 3 weeks. Unfortunately, I didn't know any better back then and just waited calmly. Now I would just pay out of pocket but have my son checked asap! I looked at your daughter's picture ( from what I can tell her asymmetry is mild). Tatiana ( mom to , 10 months) > > > > > > hello there, > > > > > > Hopefully you can help me.
