I will be having my lower jaw brought forward by 6mm my

os said he will not use a splint just 2 elastics one on each

side. Has anyone had surgery this way withouit a wafer

splint and if so is this common. My os says its very common.

It is possible that he will be using rigid fixation (plates and

screws). My OS said that I would not have been splinted and wired if I

had chosen the rigid fixation route. OYu should ask your doctor more

questions about the entire process. The more he explains, the more you

will be prepared.

I will be having rigid fixation 3 scres each side with

elastics on each side i thinj he said one on each. I asked

his nurse and she said she had worked for 3 oral surgeons

and they all did it this way. I was just curios did you rigid

fixation or something else??

I have no srews and no plates. Once the jaw was broken, my OS used 1

small wire on each side to hold the bones loosely in place. I was then

wired shut for 6 weeks. In my x-rays, all I can see is those 2 little

wires, and the spots where the bone is healing. It seems that each Os

prefers different methods, so I am not sure that there is one right

way for this to be done. I had very little pain, and now that I am

unwired, I have not had any relapse yet (and hopefully won't have any

ever).

i had rigid fixation but i have a splint and elastics as well. the

answer to your question is that it really depends from doctor to

doctor. some doctors like bill arnett in santa barbara will ONLY ever

do rigid fixation whereas others prefer wiring. there are pros and

cons to both options and it will also depend on what your individual

case is. for example, some doctors if operating on both top and

bottom prefer to wire wheras if they were only doing top they would

be fine with doing rigid fixation.

wiring is the way jaw surgery was first conducted. rigid fixation is

a more recent development. in terms of whether it is standard

practice, well it's much like asking whether it's standard practice

to brush your teeth with Crest toothpaste. A lot of people do it but

not everyone.

The point is, rymi, that different docs do different things. Yes,

there have been many patients who have had only elastics and no

splint. Others (like me) had a splint, but no elastics and no wiring -

- just the three little screws on each side. Others are wired, with

or without a splint, for varying amounts of time.

I think if I were you, and trusted my surgeon enough to turn him

loose with a scalpel and a saw inside my mouth, I'd trust his

judgement about what I needed post-op, as well. In fact, that is what

I did. I was surprised, and somewhat frightened, when I left the

hospital with no elastics, a splint and no wiring except that which

held the splint in place. But it worked out fine.

If your guy has done a thousand of these procedures, that's a

reasonable indication that he knows what he's about.
