Guest guest
Anyone have any advice on hemorrhoids? I have searched online and found many sites recommending Vick’s vapor rub, of all things! I don’t think I’ll be using that. I am using a cream, which is keeping things comfortable for me, but I wonder if anyone has any success with shrinking/eliminating hemorrhoids. Guest guest
The kegels are a great idea! I hadn’t even thought of that. Thanks for mentioning that, and the witch hazel herbal tea, too. I will have to look into that at my local health food store. I am also a staunch supporter of using natural methods and products. I've noticed that the more I get my diet/elimination under control, the better the pain and suffering! As for simply alleviating the pain, sitz baths do work great - and if you can find an astringent herbal one, they are the best. You can look for sitz bath recipes online, especially if you browse around the postpartum section of herbal therapies. Sometimes, just an epsom salt bath works. Witch hazel can be helpful because it is also astringent (astringents help to " tighten " the vessel walls, thus contracting the vein/ hemorrhoid). The prepared witch hazel you buy in the store can have alcohol or other ingredients which sometimes sting, but I still keep a few cotton balls saturated with witch hazel in the freezer, just in case it's too much to bear. The cold really helps too! It stings for a second, then goes away. You can buy witch hazel herb and just make that into a tea and keep a small bottle of it on the back of toilet, then I just wipe with it whenever I'm in there. That can really help. As for as internal help - I know supplements are pretty much illegal on the diet, but any supplement which is known for assisting 'vein strength' can help. Eating TONS and TONS of blueberries can tone the veins. Other herbs I know of are horse chestnut (internally) and there are a few others you could research. I'm approaching it from the perspective of getting my digestion in order, because I think it's the elimination probs that are causing them. Oh yeah - and toning the perineum muscles (kegal exercises) can help as well. Good luck! AMI To: BTVC-SCD From: tprescott@... It sounded a little crazy to me, but a lot of people posted they found relief with using the Vicks for hemorrhoids. Maybe I will give it a try. It works great. Though I don't have that problem so have never used it for that issue. I find it really helpful for other things though. Mara Anyone have any advice on hemorrhoids? Guest guest
It's been a few years since I had one (I don't mind) but DH had one discovered at his last physical. I had him do what I have done in the past: soaks. I got one of these shallow plastic containers that slip under the bed, that works well in the tub (or DH preferred the shower so he could lean against the wall). Put a few inches of pretty warm water in, as warm as you can stand, really, and soak at least a couple times a day for 15-20 minutes. Take a book with you, it's kind of a nice quiet time that way. When I was told to soak I had a thrombosed hemmorhoid which was excruciating! So I had to soak four times a day. After you soak, cut open a vitamin E capsule and spread it liberally on. You may want to wear a panty shield as the vitamin E can be a bit messy. If the hemmorhoid is farther inside so the soaking won't get to it, the heat may still help, and in this case I'd get the vitamin E suppositories by Carlson, which you insert at bedtime. They are very soothing and will get the E to higher locations. It may take a couple of weeks to get rid of, depending on size. DH soaked for longer than that, I think, but didn't use the E. Guest guest
My thrombosed hemmorhoid was external and (had to get DH to tell me what it looked like) it was the size and shape of a big garbanzo bean. Yes, the vitamin E and sitz baths DID shrink it. Thrombosed in this case means filled with blood (like a clot, I suppose) and gradually the warm baths and vit E did make all that disappear. I guess it reabsorbed. My hemorrhoids are external, but I did read one suggestion to use vitamin E oil, so I can give that a try. Did the suppositories shrink or eliminate your hemorrhoids? Guest guest
When I had these, I found that any " hygienic wipe " (e.g. Tucks) containing witch hazel was very soothing. You know what worked better than ANYTHING else? Swimming in a lake one summer! I guess it was the lukewarm water. I was so grateful, as a 17-year-old whose & *%$ hurt and who was too ashamed to talk about it! Get thee to lukewarm water! And feel better soon. Guest guest
<<This is the first response from this list that actually said the hemorrhoid went away! Great! There is hope for me yet.>> Maybe you didn't notice that I said I had them once. Went away when I quit the Nutrasweet/dairy !! Never has come back. And I questioned whether you've considered that a food sensitivity might be the cause of yours, too. Guest guest
Yeah. And good luck. Of course, if you live around here in the northwest, a lukewarm lake would be a real rarity! Okay, I need to find a lukewarm lake! LOL!
