Hi, don't be afraid. You will read here that everyone has a different recovery. There is not much pain involved, I think frustration is biggest factor. The best thing you can do is take it easy when you return home, get enough fluids and rest as much as you can. You will be able to go on your holiday but you may still be on a liquid or soft diet. I am one month today, (lower jaw advancment) I was unwired one week ago so I can only open my teeth wide enough to put my finger in to the first joint. I had a bowl of hot cereal for breakfast. I eat with a baby feeding spoon. I do not know what a wafer is. Hope all of this helps Michele
Guest guest
Lottie, A wafer is just another name for a splint. My ortho calls it wafer whereas my oral surgeon calls it splint and I finally figured out they were talking about the same thing. Basically the splint/wafer is like this mold that fits over your top and bottom teeth. You know those mouth pieces that boxers put into their mouth during fights? Well that's what my splint is like only less bulky, as in I don't have a boxer mug but boy do I look like I've been in a boxing fight:-) I am 4 days post-op from upper and genio. Please don't be scared. Really, I go through everything and survived. At the moment I don't know for how long I will have the wafer/splint in for but I imagine for at least 3 weeks and for a maximum of 8 weeks. I have elastic bands that are holding my moouth together very tightly so eating has proved a challenge but you figure it out eventually. In terms of going on holiday less than one month post-op, have you checked this with your surgeon? I assume you're not going away too far but if you are I would check. My guess is that on holiday you won't be as active as you usually are on holidays but it will be a good time for you to relax and recover in a nice environment so that's an added bonus! Try not to stress about the surgery too much and whenever you have any questions do two things: shout them out to this group AND ask your doctors. They will always have the best answer for you particular case whereas this group will always be able and willing to lend a listening ear and extend a big virtual hug. Best, Sara > Hi. Guest guest
I am actually getting my splint (wafer) removed on Monday, and I am going to ask to keep it so that I can take pictures and post them on this site so that people can see what they look like. I am briging my camera to the office with me in case he won't let me bring it home. I'll let oyu know when I get the picture posted. > Hi.
