Read around on the site. And tell us, please, what you're expecting to

have done. That will make considerable difference in what to expect, as

will whether your surgeon expects to wire you shut, with or without a

splint, after surgery.

In general, though, I hope it will be reassuring to you to know that

for many people whatever the procedures, the worst part is the waiting

and anxiety ahead of time. And there is usually not a lot of pain

involved. Swelling, yes. Bruising, yes. Numbness, yes. But usually not

a lot of pain.

Ho-kay. First of all, let's work on your idea about what's gonna

happen, or what's been suggested.

You're probably not going to have both jaws " broken. " Your surgeons

will make very carefully calculated cuts in both jaws, so as to

modify them and bring them into alignment, so the jaws can work for

you better.

Not at all unusual to be " nervous as hell. " I panicked like crazy

when my ortho suggested surgery. I never had a clue that I needed

it, and was terrified. The worst part of the whole thing, in

retrospect, was being terrified for the better part of two years.

There are folks who do not get satisfactory results. I'd be lying if

I told you everybody is happy with the outcomes. Some have enduring

pain. Some have enduring numbness. But most find that the worst part

of the whole thing is the anxiety awaiting surgery. Talk with your

surgeon about these issues. Tell him or her what you're worried

about, and ask for some help in making these decisions.

I'm not saying that you'll have a guaranteed easy ride. I did have

one, at age 57 or so. But you may have serious and lasting problems,

and you need to know the risks. The odds are, though, that you'll do

fine, and discover that your mouth and face work a lot better for

you after the surgery. At least, that's my view. Ask your doc for

another opinion. And if you're not happy with what you get there,

ask one or two more docs!

C.
